Hi,

A simple question - would it be worthwhile for me to change my video card from a HD 5870 to a GTX 480? My specs are:
Asus sabretooth 55i
i7 860
8gb kingston ram
150 gb velocirapter
1 tb WD green

Thanks for your help!

A GTX 480 slightly beats out a HD 5870 in some tests, but not by much. You'd also be looking at putting another 100 or so dollars for a card which uses more power and runs much hotter.

You'd be better off keeping the 5870 and overclocking it, or getting another 5870 if your motherboard supports it.

My un-biased personal opinion would be, the GTX 480 is the faster card across the board, the HD 5870 holds it's own in some games at some resolutions but more often than not the GTX480 wins, in some cases it actually wins by a decent margin, would it be worth upgrading from your HD 5870, in performace terms I suppose yes (purely because it is a bit faster) but in price terms IMO not, what you will lose on the sale of your existing card plus the premium for the 480 would keep me away at this time, but seeing as you aint me only you can decide! :)

OP, I would not advise anyone who owned a 5850, 470, 5870 or 480 to upgrade. You own a 5870, which provides more than ample performance on all current games, something that is unlikely to change in the foreseeable future. I see the 480 as a slightly improved alternative on the same performance rung, rather than a meaningful upgrade, without even considering factors such as heat and noise. In short, I would wait for revised Fermi cards and/or Ati's next generation before I even considered an upgrade.

Good point, this comparison shows the 5870 at 975, not quite 1000mhz but I don't think voltage modification was used for either cards, I'll leave you to decide if your claim still stands :)

http://alienbabeltech.com/main/?p=16997&page=20

I own quite a few of those games and get a good 10-15% more frames on my HD5870 :wtf: still, those gtx480 numbers seem nice, but do you have anywhere else that has the comparisons? I'm not a fan of babel (the fact that all of their hd5870 results also lags mine, even though they've got a far better processor than me, is an indication to some shinanigans) :) still, is it worth the money? mind you, in the US the gtx480 is only slightly unreasonbale ^^ in the UK it's extortionate.

I agree, I am not suggesting my linky is the "be all and end all", I don't know of any others from well know sources, and yes, I wouldn't entertain a 480 over here ATM even before I got my 5850.

aye :) TPU should do a full comparison! The one they did on the gtx480 review did actually show the hd5870 being on top though (modern warfare 2). Still, the gtx480 (~£450) is a very powerful card, but in the UK it costs £50 less than a hd5970 (~£500) and a whopping £150 more than a hd5870 (~£280). ~50% price premium for 10% boost at stock is just meh.

If they dropped the price to £300 like it should really be, then we'll actually have a decent fight on our hands to drive down prices.

don't do it, wait for the refresh coming later this year, don't jump the gun on this, the 480 is more like a beta version for the architecture on a shit process(40nm is shit and has too many problems), the refresh should be alot better.

. . . . . unless you use adobe premiere cs5, I know someone who gets a boost like you haven't seen before in that app with the 480

Yeah 10% :p. But ATi drivers have some flaw always. I'm sure the cards are still not running at their full potential. And in most benchmarks the 5870 is about 3 frames below the GTX480. A slightly OCed 5870 is a GTX 480 with less power consumption and heat :D

Agreed, however the TPU review was on the "earliest" Forceware drivers and NVidia usually do tend to optimise further, I am not contesting your logic, in fact the contrary, as I mentioned earlier, I agree that he shouldn't upgrade, it's a waste of money, I am just trying to ensure the OP is making that judgement based on at least some performance facts, I too am not a fan of Fermi's power consumption, heat output or price, however I do acknowledge that across the board it is "upto" 10% faster.

Hey man, i'm cool. Not the serious type or anything. :) And yep i do agree with you, it does perform up to 10% faster in some games. And i too think the OP should stick to his 5870.

No gains. Youd see no difference in gaming experience. Except if you like to walk around that heaven benchmark or that stone giant demo (which has no sense since its not a game). Hardware physix is very much unoticable in most games as well(except for batman aa) so no gains in there as well. You also need an expensive monitor for that 3d vision, that would require you to shell out extra just to experience it (and with no 100% compatibility in all games).
