Hello all. I want to upgrade from i7 4790/Z87 to an i7 6700K/Z170...

I just got an 6700K for a fair price and i want to upgrade my current rig to a new one...
I am a lite gamer, no OC addict, and i wonder that it will be a good upgrade to pass from a ddr3 (2400mhz) to ddr4 (2400mhz)... I initially wanted to get a MSI H270M Mortar ARCTIC but this chipset doesn't support OC on 6700K (this is not an issue to me) but the RAM will run only on 2133Mhz :(

For a little more cash i can go for Gigabyte Z170X Gaming 3 and in this case i will use the RAM at 2400Mhz...

Or maybe wait for RYZEN and make a whole new RIG... THANKS

Looks like a very expensive upgrade for a few fps extra. 4790 is just fine for a year or two to come...

RAM prices are high right now. You likely won't notice much of a bandwidth change between DDR3 and 4 at the same speeds but DDR4 can go to higher clocks so you could always push em.

Frankly there's nothing wrong with your DC rig performance-wise...so unless you feel the upgrade itch I'd wait to see what comes out and what you feel you really need...or want. If it is a desire thing why not go full Z170 and get the full support of your components so they can at least run at rated speeds?

I'm in no rush to leave my 4790K/DDR3 setup I've seen the comparisons and mine runs great, Ryzen might change that...but my budget won't for at least another year or two! :)

Pretty much echoes my thoughts as a 4790K user. But I will say Ryzen has me excited regardless.

Ryzen is good for gamers that currently have an "old" system.
But 4790 is still in the top 10% of fast CPU's at the moment.
The latest games still only use about 50% of my CPU's. So why upgrade?

If you upgrade your GPU to AMD Vega this year, you will get a lot more performance for the dollar instead of upgrading CPU, mainboard, memory.

The Skylake/Kaby Lake platform is a sidegrade to your Haswell, the only way you would have a true upgrade is the 2011-3 Platform or Ryzen Platform. Otherwise OC that cpu.

While ram prices are increasing, 3200mhz still seems the sweet spot in price, costing barely any more than 2400, while anything higher starts getting more expensive quickly

Keep in mind if you go with a H270 board the highest memory you will see is 2400 with a i7 6700K You need a Kaby for 3000

Just stay with what you have. There is no difference from DDR3 to DDR4 at 2400 both

Forget that... wait 3 weeks and upgrade to an AM4 Ryzen based system for a lot cheaper for the same performance.

Had a 4790K you wont notice anything new, Id sell it n wait keep what you were using. If you have the itch and need to scratch it then Ryzen is a good option.

Am probably missing something, but why do people count CPU load as an indicator of their chip's remaining usefulness/competitiveness? My old bulldozer rarely reached 50 percent as well, but it was still slower than a stock speed i3 on its dying days...
What logical step have I skipped? :)

I have the same opinion as most of the people in here, wait for Ryzen (1 week left) if that is not for you then you'll be fine another year or so till the next gen CPU's come out. In this situation with 6700K the only advantage would be OC , this could give you a bit more FPS in games if you play on 1080p and some energy efficiency.

... And ability to use fast DDR4 RAM. I'm waiting myself for Ryzen release/reviews, if it fails to meet my expectations i will be switching to i7 7700K.

Personally, I wouldn't have bothered. On the plus side, you have a higher clocked CPU with 5% IPC improvements. On the minus side, you have higher latency DDR4 RAM, most 2400MHz DDR3 come at 11-12ns, while DDR4 at the same freq comes at 15ns, which is slower. Maybe you could get a better mobo to OC etc, but I would advise to maybe sell the 6700K for a maybe better price than you bought it and save the money and wait for Zen. Being a light gamer the 4790 is a great CPU for you. You may notice close to 0 difference, except maybe in 1 or 2 games.

To be honest, it's an useless upgrade where you'll waste a lot of your money for some little performance improvement. Even the non-K version i7 should last for minimum 5 years before upgrade. It would make some sense if you were talking about the i7 2600 non-K.

I just made the upgrade to 6700k and ASRock Z170 Extreme4 mobo and 2x8Gb Corsair Vengeance LPX Black 3000Mhz CL15... The price difference was very small (like 80 bucks US)... It was o good choice to upgrade no?
