Upgrade : is it worth it?

Hi guys and gals,

Im thinking about upgrading to the intel way of things as im sick of waiting for amd to upgrade their processors (coming from an amd fan boy)

thinking about the i5 4690k wondering what the overclock potential is under custom water, my AMD 8350 @ 4.8ghz is performing fine and under water but wondering if i should see a performance jump in games by the upgrade.

rest of specs:
8350 @ 4.8
280x 1100 core and 1600 mem
asus sabertooth rev 2
corsair vengeance cas 9 8gig

AMD is typically good for the money, but if you need more horsepower than what the FX-8XXX series offers, it's typically Intel time.

It depends on the games. Are there any games in particular that you stick to? Typically, yes, you'll see more performance. Intels have better single-threaded performance than AMD. AMD used to combat this with higher clock speeds, but Intels these days clock up pretty well without too much effort. Most games don't thread things out much at all and therefore rely on that strong single-threaded performance.

Typically, it won't be a noticeable difference, but there are some specific cases where it's a little more night and day.

I think now is a god time to upgrade, with prices flattened out so its very affordable to upgrade right now.

IMHO I don't see much changing going forward as we have reached the point where I see no great need for more speed and processing power beyond what we have so other then those who just like spending money, what is the point in spending money over nano seconds of better speed at a high dollar cost when you will never know the difference after spending that money.

Better doesn't always mean faster.

i know and thats my point caring1 i basicly only game and use pc for general compyting tasks

the 4690k plus another motherboard will cost aroung £350 and then another water block £50 so a toal of £400 is it really worth it? thats ($589.78dollars)

keep in mind that i always buy based on value rather then just having what is the fastest

Its a great time to upgrade to Intel. AMD is going nowhere fast. Will you be able to tell the difference? A little in games but mostly in benchmarks and just in general operation. Ive always had some miner glitches with AMD. Not anything specific just that things so a little smother with Intel. Its kinda hard to explain. Is it worth the $. Probably not. Not unless you can get a good price for your hardware. But the prices on AMD CPUs are dropping fast. The extra cores with AMD does nothing. I have done side by side encoding with 4 core Intel not over clocked and AMD 8 cores and the Intel beat it. Gaming benchmarks you will see close to 10% improvement.

If you're upgrading then I'd say jump to the 4790k. Same thread count as your current but more power per thread.

I saw a great improvement going from my Phenom II x4 940 (at 3.7) to stock i5-4670k. In your case however, the OC you're running on the 8350 should be giving you good performance and moving to a 4690k probably isn't worth the cost. If I was in your position, I'd sit things out and see what 2016 brings - AMD could be brining something new to the table in 2016 for desktop CPUs.

I got the itch a while ago too and went for it, but I did it more in pursuit of the hobby rather than expecting a big performance upgrade. It's kind of a pricey jump, like you mentioned above, and even if you sell off your old parts, I don't think it's quite worth the cost from a gaming performance standpoint alone (as others have mentioned).

AMD could be brining something new to the table in 2016 for desktop CPUs.

For performance, they've been sitting on the FX line for a pretty good while (the FX-8150 came out in 2011! Went up against the i7-2600k!). Seems like they need to bring something to the table and soon. I like AMD, I really do, but if they're going to sit for this long, I'd expect their next CPU to be a good one.

Yeah at that resolution and with that cost to upgrade it's not worth it. A new wallpaper sounds like a good idea. I change mine every 2 weeks.

Just yesterday I was drooling over a 28" 4K screen for $399 on sale.
I don't need it and can't afford it, but that doesn't stop me wanting it.

Ha ha yesterday I was drooling over a Gigabyte R9 280X card for 170$ and I have the money to get it and I know it performs at least 2x better than my current card, but if I really think about it I don't need it. I want it. Wanting it and needing it are two different things.
