So My current rig is detailed in my System Specs but I will list it here too.

Processor: AMD Phenom II x 6 1055T (OC to 3.3Ghz)
Motherboard: Asus M4A78GTD Pro / USB 3 (AMD 890GX)
Cooling: 1x 200mm, 5x 120mm & Corsair Hydro Series H50 V2 water cooling with dual push/pull @ 4500rpm
Memory: Corsair XMS3 8GB PC3-12800 1600MHz (4x2GB) OC 1800
Video Card(s): ATI Radeon HD7970 Vapor X (1100/1500)
Hard Disk(s): Samsung 840 Pro SSD (OS) & 2 x 2TB WD Caviar Black (SATA III)
Optical Drive: Samsung (SH-S223L) DVD /- RW 22x
LCD/CRT Model: 2x Samsung S24B300 @ 1920*1080 + 1 Samsung LE40B550 40inch @ 1920*1080
Case: Antec 1200
Sound Card: Onboard
Power Supply: XFX Pro Series 850W Black Edition PSU
Software: Win 7 64bit

So naturally I think my weakest points here are the Mobo/CPU (getting old) and possibly the Ram.

I am thinking of swapping over to an Intel i7 and was looking at something along this lines

Motherboard: Asus MAXIMUS VII RANGER, Intel Z97, Socket 1150, Motherboard
Link: http://www.scan.co.uk/products/asus...6gb-s-sata-raid-pcie-30-(x16)-d-sub-(vga)-dvi

CPU: Intel Core i7 4770K Haswell CPU Without Fan Haswell Socket 1150
Link: http://www.scan.co.uk/products/inte...ghz-39ghz-turbo-1250mhz-gpu-35x-ratio-84w-oem

Cooler: Corsair H100i
Link: http://www.scan.co.uk/products/cors...radiator-and-fans-s115x-2011-1366-fm1-fm2-am2

The CPU I would have prefered to go for a 4790k but I can't seem to find only, one a 4790 (so no unlocked multi if I am correct?)

Cooler, I need a new one as whilst my H50 is suitable I plan on reusing the old mobo/cpu for a PC for my boys/media centre.

Any suggestions though, I've always run AMD since now but the prices of Intel are appealing to me. This is about the "MAX" of my budget but I do have some wiggle room.

Mobo's I am pretty flexible but I would prefer to stick with Asus, they've never steered me down a wrong path and I have only ever had trouble with GB,

you could get an Z87M Extreme4for a little bit cheaper, but i dont think its enough cheaper. so thats probably a good board for the price you chose there.
had a bit of a look over at scann for alternataves in that price bracket, but really thats probably the best for the money.

That's what I was thinking, I'd love to go Sabretooth but I know I can't afford that.

Is there a 4790k release?

Surely with Haswell E not even out yet I will be way out of my price range here?

Just found out the 4790K is due out June time. May be worth the month or two wait.

No, there is a 4790k. It is Devils Canyon. There is also a 4690k, and an unlocked pentium chip also. 4790k will have a base clock of 4.0GHZ and turbo to 4.4GHZ.

Chips that are to cater to the enthusiast overclock crowd. Improved silicon, improved TIM between the die and IHS, and a few other improvements. These chips are only compatible with Z97, though they are still LGA1150.

That seems to be the paper launch. Paper launch is June 2nd, and sounds like actual market available to the masses not till September. (rumors)

I do belive the June paper launch, but having to wait till September for market availability seems to be quite stretch.

Go for an i7 4790K & Z97 combo. The new Devil's Canyon CPUs are meant to be awesome overclockers, so you'll have plenty of overclocking room. Can I ask what you use your computer for most? If its mainly gaming, you could go for the i5 4690K instead, sell your current GPU, get something like a GTX 770 / R9 280x and a 1440p monitor. A lot of people have recommended the jump to 1440p gaming. But up to you.

EDIT: I misread the graphics card - an R9 280x is similar to the HD 7970.

Do you know something we all don't? There is no overclocking data released on the chips yet.

Though I do believe they will overclock better then 4770k/4670k that is for sure. Hell the 4790k turbo's to 4.4GHZ which is already about the average overclock of a 4770k :p

Thanks guys.

Layton, I appreciate the comments but I have no plans to sell my 7970 yet...

As for what I use it for, I do mostly gaming with some editing (video) I am pretty set on an i7 if I am honest.

Think I'll try to see about a 4790k

Sorry - I meant to say they are meant to be better overclockers. There's been a number of press releases from various websites, suggesting that the Haswell Refresh will be much better overclockers than the current Haswell processors. I should be more clear in the future :p

Thanks guys.

I misread your graphics card for a 7870, which wouldn't cope with 1440p gaming as much. But in that case, I think the upgrade to the i7 would be more useful.

The R9 280X is the exact same card as the HD 7970 and the GTX 770 is a GTX 680 so selling the HD 7970 and getting either of those cards is pointless

If you read a post I later made, I pointed out that I'd misread the graphics card. But yes, what you're saying is right, and I agree upgrading the 7970 is not worth it.

Upgrade CPU and Mobo now. I don't think upgrading the CPU cooler or RAM would be worth it.

Cooler would be required as I'll be building another rig with the excess parts, thus moving the cooler over.

Unless on the other rig I go with air.

Okay, as the H100i doesn't fit the Antec 1200.

Suggestions on a new case? I have around £150 to play with.

Hmmm I was looking at the 750D,

The 540 air seems a little small (i like roomy cases)

The NZXT Phantom 530 or 630. The Corsair 750D does look quite good, but not my style of aesthetics. I always hear good reviews about the Fractal Design Define R4, or if you're looking for a roomier case, its bigger brother the Define XL. Perhaps the Bitfenix Shinobi XL or Colossus. Lots to pick from :p

Hmmm I was looking at the 750D,

The 540 air seems a little small (i like roomy cases)

Try to look at the NZXT Switch 810. Just get the gun metal or the matte black, those are fixed with the previous drive caddy issue

The Fractal Design Define R4 is so beautiful, chose it because optical drives almost always cripple the look of the case.. And there is plenty of room to work with :)

Okay, so I am set on the following I think.

Corsair 750D
Asus ROG Maximus VII Ranger
Intel 4790K
Corsair H100i
4 x Extra Corsair SP120 LED fans.

Think I got a cooling solution sorted. Let me know what you think. I am mixing the stock H100i (SP120 fans) with a pair of SP120LEDS for a P/P system.

Cooling

CPU: 1 x H100i
Front: 2 x AF140L (Stock case fans)
Rear: 1 x AF140L (Stock case fans)
Bottom: 1 x SP120LED (Other fan slot will be used by HDD Caddy)
Top: 2 x SP120 (Pull Fans for H100i)
2 x SP120LED (Push fans for H100i)
1 x SP120LED (Next to Rad on spare mount)

Corsair 750D
Intel 4970K
Asus Z97 Sabertooth Mk1
Corsair H100i
Corsair SP120's PWM High Performance x 2 to go with H100i P/P

to go with the remaining parts which are.... (mainly GPU)

Sapphire HD 7970 Vapor X 3GB

What do you guys think or what would you change?
