3dmark is useless. and i mean that 100% seriously - there is NO use comparing seperate cards with these programs.

Test in games - you'll see a difference. (Not a huge one, since there isn't too much of a performance difference from an 8800GT to a 4870, but 30% or so at higher res, maybe higher with AA)

i personally consider 30% a good performance difference lol. 10-20 is mediocre, 25%+ is good imo. That is something i wish some review sites would do, is do a new review with catalyst 9.6 and w/e nvidia's newest drivers are with the GTX 260 192/216, HD 4850/70/90, GTX 275/80/85. but it'll never happen :(

I usually don't upgrade unless it's atleast a 75% gain myself

No that's not what I was talking about, I was talking about my experience with temps with ATI cards and NVIDIA cards but what do I know I don't have 40,000 posts.

very true, u do not have 40,000 posts , but i could care less bout post count. The only time i really take what someone on here says to heart are people like Mussels, Jc, fitseries, Solaris, Damulta, Btarunr, and shit there's one other dude that i pay attention to can't remember his name :p.

But anyways you did start the statement with 8800GT is better than the HD 4870 :p. Temps could be factor to case temp, ambient temp.

and iirc with benchmarks the 9800GTX did outperform the 8800GTX but only at like 1680x1050 or less and even then with aa the sometiems 8800GTX pulled ahead. At higher resolutions though the 9800GTX/+ gets beat. Hmmm i wonder if we've answered the OP's question, NEVER use 3dmarks to base a buy or base performance off of. is there an echo in here? :D

EDIT: huh well i guess i was thinkin of fitseries just didn't match his new avy to teh old longhorns one. Oh and erocker is very respectable dude to listen to aswell. Cdawall, JrRacinfan. haha so there are roughly 20 some odd members that i usually recognize and listen to their posts without second guessing em.

I like erocker, he's a good guy. I never said the 8800GT was better than the 4870, I meant to say it was better OVERALL compared to the 4850.

shadee, i still beg to differ. HD 4850 is meant to compete with the 9800GTX+ which it does and surpasses, but loses to the GTS 250. I'm tryin to think of anything that the 8800GT does better and nothing comes to mind :p. I suppose depending on the system there could be very very lil performance difference, like resolution and CPU your using.

I know some advantages, Nvidia control panel, nice logo xD, cooler temps, better coolers but I guess it depends on price-range and personal choice.

No real need to reinstall the OS when upgrading video cards. But try the obvious, reinstall the drivers and see what happens then.

As stated, its not a real big performance jump in general.

I'm just going to respond to the original post of this thread since a majority of the posts since then have been off topic.

Any and all reviews show the 4850 being a superior card to the 8800GT. Using a 9 year old benchmarking program has got to be one of the worst ways to get a basis of performance and makes these claims of "downgrading" null. I just want to know how in the hell did 4870 vs. GTX260 come up once again? I'll just spew out a couple performance based facts based on first hand experience. The GTX 260 is superior to the 4870 (512mb) at any resolution over 1680x1050. The GTX 260 and 1gb 4870 are very close with resolutions over 1680x1050, however, the GTX 260 (216 shader) does edge it out by an extremely small margin. Not enough of a margin to pay more money for the card. I just traded my GTX 260 (216) for a 1gb 4870 and you know what?! While gaming I can tell absolutely no difference! None, zero, zilch! Now, gaming performance aside the GTX 260 has better stock cooling and is more quiet, but it's also a bigger (hotter) card. PhysX? Forget about it, by the end of the year it will be defunct. Buy what is within your budget and understand that 60 fps and 62 fps makes no damn difference whatsoever.

Now, if I hear any more people calling others fanboy's and assholes, you can forget about having posting privledges here for a month.

I made this same switch, but in reverse. I went from an HD4850 1GB to a PNY 8800GT. I noticed a decent drop in FPS in the 8800, but nothing too bad. There is a difference between them for sure, especially on Crysis.

Apparently listening is above some of you as is discussing video cards in a respectable manner. Thread closed.
