I am upgrading my 9800 Pro 256 mb. I want a new card that can provide a noticeable jump from my 9800 Pro. I am still on AGP, so no new cards:cry:. Here are choices I have considered:

1. X1600Pro - 256mb - Only $106 after rebate.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814102666

2. Nvidia 6800 - $140 after rebate. I can't find many of these cards, and when I do they are cheap brands. IE:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814140067

3. X800 GTO - $151 after rebate.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814102609

Notes:
I don't care about having HDR/ SM 3.

I would also like to know if any of the above cards can be unlocked. I hear the 6800 overclocks to insane values.

Please mention any other cards that meet the requirements. Thanks for any suggestions.

6800 has about a 50/50 chance of unlocking to 16 pipelines. Not worth the risk with that brand though IMO. Go for the x800gto, it will overclock nicely and has 256mb of GDDR3 which is nice for newer games.

Bikr, thanks for the suggestion, but I thought the X800 GTO2 was only PCI Express. I will probably go with the X800 gto, the 6800s are just to hard too find. Thanks for the help.

Check ebay, looks like you can get a cheap used 6800GT on there.

I had one of the GTO's, and they have an R480 core. They run MUCH cooler than the R420, and I had the card OC'ed to 591 on the memory and ~490 on the core with the stock cooler.

One other suggestion, is that you may be able to pick up a used card in trader forums or ebay. I bought a X800XTPE to replace my GTO, and the XT only cost me $190 shipped with the full retail package. The downside was the XT had the R420 core, and it was hotter that hades. Had to upgrade the cooler to a ATI Silencer 4.

Benchmark Scores Fast. I don't need epeen.
for that money you should be able to grab a 6800GT (99% of which clock to and beyond 450\1.2ghz) or you could get a 7600GT, though its not as good as a 6800GT\ultra unless you clock the snot out of it.

i was talking clock to clock, the 6800GT wins hands down. 435\1.2GHz i get 6100pts in 3dm05, and thats with a crappy stock cooler heating my gpu well into the 80s. Your own guru3d link shows the 7600GT bringing in a lower score in 3dm05 at much higher clocks of 560MHz \ 1.4GHz.

To put that into perspective thats a 28.8% core clock hike and a 16.7% memory hike, and the 7600GT still cant pull in as high a score.

ummm. i disagree 7600gt out performs the 6800gt and is built around new technology.

In newer benchmarks the 7600 GT beats the 6800 GT thanks to the former having support for esoteric technologies but when it comes to pure power and image quality, in most games you will need a 7800 series to outperform a 6800 series.

If you still haven't bought the GTO yet, I found a used X800XT for $165:

http://forums.pcper.com/showthread.php?p=3809268&postcount=1

Actually, I almost bought the card from him a while back. But he was asking $200 plus shipping then, and I got a better offer on the XTPE. It's already got an AS4 on it, too.

careful that's a used card, most likely previously overclocked, and has a shorter life because of it.
