upgrading agp to x1950pro

what brand would be better for overclocking? 256 or 512?

i'm upgrading from a x800xl, and moving that card into another machine that has a 9700pro in it. moving the 9700 to my moms pc. that way we all win.

mostly wondering if i should get a powercooler, saphire, or his. or any that i missed

I can only comment on the Sapphire brand as that's the one I have - I think you can only get the AGP version in 512MB (I could very well be wrong) from Sapphire anyroad.

It's easy to OC this card - I use the Over-drive feature built into the Catalyst Control Center (CCC) as this will do everything for you - however, if you want to do things yourself I expect someone will suggest something better.

I'm not sure if ATiTool supports OC'ing on the X1950 Pro - the reason I had to stop using it was due to the fact it didn't have support. In fact I'll check now....

I think GeCube make an AGP X1950XT in AGP... yeah they do but it's only a 256MB card.

Don't know what sort of price you're looking at, but for a bargin, eBay will probably have a decent 512MB Sapphire on their for cheap - which you can always replace the stock cooler and whack some decent thermal paste and a kick ass cooler!

You can always look at the HIS range of IceQ products... they've got a rather fat-ass cooler.

how dos the 7900gs stack up?

i just want pretty much the best, which one x1950pro or 7900gs. i rulled out the x1950xt seems gecube has problems with that one

I'd go for the X1950 Pro personally. Best thing I've ever bought. This review is probably the PCIe variants but it'll give you the same sort of idea I expect.

x1950pro is prob better... and you can get the HIS for a good price with 512 memory

HIS is really good, i had a x800gto from them originally... but sent it back because i found a better deal on my current card. sapphire is pretty good as well.

X1950 PRO is more powerful than the 7900GS.

If you want the best AGP card, you can get a 7950GT AGP, but it will be costly .


In regards to the original question, the brands don't really matter, its more about the cooling. The brands you mentioned are all reputable, so they shouldnt give problems (unless you get a bad card, which is rare). Get the card thats cheapest/has best cooling/has good warranty.

The X1950 PRO's don't overclock *that* much anyways (you can OC with ATi tool with driver level overclocking, but you wont get much higher than ATi overdrive), and the slight overclock doesnt give that much of a performance increase.

Memory size (256mb vs 512mb) doesnt make a difference when it comes to overclocking. The only time you will get a performance increase with 512mb is if you are playing games on a large screen or a screen with lots of pixels.

i'm not worried about heat i have zalman's on all my other vid cards. i'll change this 1 also.

will i see a noticable improvment over my old x800xl?

i mostly play bf2 when i play fps, but i'm also really into silkroad online

Yeah I would have thought you'd notice an increase in performance with your same settings. I find the X1950 Pro holds its own with higher resolutions with high details. I play most of my games (including BF2) with most settings on High Quality with decent AA enabled. I want best performance with image quality, even if that means I have a frame rate of 40. Which I hardly get, usually higher.
