Getting 315$ from a build I'm doing for a high school teacher, and I'm upgrading CPU, motherboard, and RAM.

How big of a performance difference is there between the 920 and 9950 Phenoms if I don't plan on overclocking?

Is the 4830 going to blow away my 8800GTS (640/320 G80) at high resolutions, or at least keep up?

http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=3492&p=9 As you can see clock for clock the a phenom cpu beats the 920 at most of office apps, but for gaming the 920 beats the 9950. Maybe because of L3 cache.

The 920 beats the 9950 in every one of those benches displayed there.

How did you get someone to pay you $300 to build a computer for them? Might as well just get a dell.

And yes, the 4830 will be a good bit better than G80 gts, I don't know if I would use the words "blow away", but better for sure. And I'd get a 940BE unless your trying to save money. Why wouldn't you oc?

Because I think OCing is pointless and unhealthy for a chip. I want longevity and stability, it's fast enough stock likely. I refuse to take part in the giant dick measuring contest that is OCing until I actually need it.

Also, I'm on a tight budget.

Also, it's a workstation for CAD and 3d graphics rendering, ATI firegl, xeon quad, 8gb RAM, non computer knowledgable buyer.

Either way he's getting a badass rig.

Dual 19" 1650xwhatever monitors, good system overall.

It's never fast enough when you can go faster for free. :)

I need to find some people who need a rig like that, that's some fun building w/ a nice check.

Phenom II 920 would probably be the way to go if your really opposed to oc'ing, then again the difference b/t a oc'd 940 and a stock 920 would probably be about the same as the difference between the 9950 and the 920, so you can save some extra dough and go w/ that.

The point of a OCing is for u to spent less. Just like u buy a E5200 and oc it to beat an E7200, now u don't have to spent a little more on a E7200.

If you don't plan on OC'ing go with a PII 920 and a 4850. The 4830 is a great offering, but it's clocks are quite low, which is what makes it a great choice to OC. If you don't plan on OC'ing at all pick up the 4850 for the higher clocks. Right now Newegg is offering a 4850 for $129 after MIR. Or you could oick up the Apollo for $144, that copper heatsink looks very nice for a bit more.

Total of 700$ after shipping, will use one of my Cooler Master PSUs to power it all (650W Extremepower)
Also will run TV card constantly.

Pushing an ASUS 1080p 16:9 widescreen.

Good deal?

Anyways know anything that would cut some fat off the price?

I don't overclock.

You could always get a 9850 black edition Mine is fast as hell, and for you not wanting to overclock It would be perfect and save you some money.

Looks alright. No need for 8gb. You could probably find a cheaper 4850. The 640gb is nearly silent. You'll struggle with maxing out top-end games, especially w/o oc'ing. 9950 would probably be fine if your not oc'ing. Pretty good deal. You should oc. :)

I love 8gb, makes gaming while watching TV a breeze :p

Also the most graphic intensive game I play is Fallout 3.

Also, no, I won't OC.

Also, isn't Deneb faster clock for clock?

The Apollo is the 2nd cheapest 4850 but not by much, and has a really great cooling system.

Anyone know ANYTHING about the case and it's volume?

Should be a breeze w/ 4gb, but more the merrier.

Then yeah you'll be rolling.

I know. I just said you should. The performance is noticeable and the danger is minimal.

It is. The difference is minimal though. Your talking a 200-400mhz difference. That is a difference easily gained with light overclocking. You see my point?

I've never heard anything about the company, that is a nice cooler though.

I don't, are dimensions listed?

Yeah, I bought an 8GB RAM set for my computer not long ago. I am building another AM2 rig that's gonna have my old Corsair 450w, 8600gts, this 5200+ (I'm getting a 5400 BE in my rig), and 4GB of the ram from my computer. So each computer will have 4GB from the same 8GB ram set. I don't come anywhere near close to using 8GB, and Vista with superfatfetch takes up only about 1GB, F@H only takes ~80MB (I run the GPU version only on this rig), which leaves almost 3GB for any game, and even Crysis isn't that fat.

This computer is basically going to be futureproof AND multi-usage.

Later on I'll go for a higher end sound card :)

Updated, 4gb OCZ Reaper.

Perhaps I'll bump it up to 3.0 and maybe a little more on the memory and video card. I'll buy a nice air cooler later down the road if needed.

for ~800$ you could get a decent i7 rig :p

But what does an I7 have to offer over Phenom? Overclockability? Minute performance increase? The same horrible experience I've always had with Intel? I'll pass.

I gtg sleep but I definitely will argue with that :)
just quickly:
1. very multi-threaded... and multi-threaded games are coming
2. performance is just plain better
3. it OCs pretty well still
4. read write etc is better
5. it is just plain more powerful
6. (this goes in fav am3 too) ddr3 a 1600mhz 6gb at cas 7 is sweet

futureproof? *points at 300$ i7 920*

for ~800$ you could get a decent i7 rig :p

He has a $700 comp setup and he has a $80 mobo and a $180 proc, now add $110 more on the proc price and a ton more on the mobo (i dont even want to look), with his exact setup and swapping out to a i7 920 would raise the price far more than $100.

This too.

Cheapest I7 board is 2x the price, CPU is >3/2x the price...

DDR3 is super expensive.

I'll stick with what is necessary and futureproof, yet cost effective

I think you will be good. You will be able to move the 920 to 3 GHz no problem, and that is definitely not going to shorten it's life at all. I've also never heard of apollo, but that cooler looks nice.

Oh and i7 is going to be way more than just $100..more like $200-$300

Yeah, like $100 for CPU, then like $150 for mobo, then RAM like another $100.

Either way the PII 920 and a 4850 should be a solid build for quiet a while.

Yeah, especially now that I've found out I don't even have to pay for RAM, the buyer thinks he's only getting 4gb 800mhz from my old machine, thus making RAM half the price IF I move to 8gb again.
