Upgrading from an E8400 / 4850

Long-time lurker. Looking for some input as it’s finally time to upgrade my ageing PC.
As per my specs, it’s currently an E8400 clocked at 3.6 with a frankly awful and loud Palit 4850 (http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/showthread.php?t=71546).

Recently my machine has taken to restarting randomly during or after periods of high utilization. I'm guessing it’s either the video card or the PSU on the way out. I've backed off the OC, cleaned the dust, added cooling etc. The reality is that I've spent as much time on it as I'm willing to so I’m looking towards a new build as the 4850 isn’t cutting it these days anyway.

I’ve been keeping up with hardware and have been eyeing upgrading for a long time, however as always life has a tendency to get in the way of these things.
Anyway, I’m looking at the machine primarily as an everyday / gaming build @1920x1200 as will be reusing a 2408Wfp but I am keen to keep storage options open. I’d also like it to be as quiet as possible.

I’m looking at roughly the following config, but I can’t make up my mind on the motherboard. I've had great experiences with Asus in the past but given the diversification of the ROG line it seems like there are now too many options at too many different price-points. What I really like about the Asus boards vs the others is the granular level of fan control and the UEFI implementation.

I’m in Australia and looking to keep the build between 1.5-2k.
CPU: I5-3570k (Wanting to keep OC’ing options open)
MOBO: Asus P8Z77-V Deluxe - Open to suggestions.
RAM: 16gb (2x8gb) Corsair CMZ16GX3M2A DDR3 1600
GPU: Gigabyte GTX670 2gb – Open to suggestions.
SSD: Samsung 840 Pro 256gb
PSU: Corsair AX760 (Probably overkill but looking for a quiet gold/platinum unit)
CASE: TBD (Leaning toward Corsair 600T but wish it had been updated at CES)

Any input or thoughts are welcome. I’m thinking Ill recycle the old CPU, Mobo and Ram and PSU into an HTPC build.

The 3770k is supposed to be one of the best cpu's for ocing

This is the supplier I use, and that system comes prebuilt for you - I usually buy the bits myself and build it but I have bought prebuilt rigs from their before and they have been exceptional. They give you the option of upgrading the rig anyway just select the options down the bottom. They are based in sydney and their shipping times are exceptional.

Hope this helps! Even if you dont use the build and just use the site, I have found they are pretty much one of the cheapest in Aus =)

hello there,, the list u made looks very good, 16gb of ram i think is overkill im back to 4gb for now and feel no issues vs 8gb, the ssd choice is amazing since i encountered lots of space issues with 120gb so 256gb is plenty. platinum psu would be great if u r running pc for long periods of time otherwise i would spend less on psu, get 8gb ram and put savings towards gtx680

I moved from an E8600 to what you see in my system specs, couldn't be happier. The price point of the 3570k is awesome. I really, really like the UD5H motherboard.

I started with air - CM 212 EVO gave which gave temps just over what I'm seeing with H20, it's an awesome cooler.

Yea, I just put it in my sig for bragging rights, lol. Never seen more than 4 GB being used, but haven't run more complicated & multiple programs with large data sets, which I will be.

Those 4850's put off a ton of heat, and while the ones I had looked to have an even more inadequate cooling, that Palit card doesn't look much better. Two single slot 4850's would hover at around 85C in CrossFire in my brother's case with an 120mm intake blowing directly on them. His cards eventually burnt themselves out. One started to display green pixel artifacts, and after a while of having them swapped around, the other one started to give out, too.

The configuration you've got is solid. If it were me, I'd consider bumping up to an 1866 kit, but it's definitely by no means a necessity.

I like the 3570k choice as well, the price point is good. The memory...I've been using those 2x4GB Ultra Low Profile Samsung sticks, they're very flexible. Your SSD choice looks good too, although...the PSU, wouldn't hurt to look at a comparable Seasonic unit. Just a thought or two.

Good luck and enjoy your new rig. I still have several e8400's in operation and while older...they're still not too shabby.

THE 840 PRO is faster but the 830 is almost as fast for less. I don't think you'll notice the speed difference at all.

The corsair HX750 gold is pretty solid and a great alternative option to the AX, i don't think I've ever heard anything bad about it. Just don't buy the HX650.

Find a reliable MB with only features you need instead of the super deluxe everything edition. More features, more heat, more failures, more money. I hear good things about the Asrock z77 extreme4/6 and it's cheaper in most circumstances. I think Asus makes Asrocks anyways. Unless you want to do extreme OC, there's no point in paying $200+ for a MB.

If you want the K editions of the i5 and i7 ivy bridge, you will lose some power savings features. I suggest you look it up first before you you decide to go with K editions. I have the 3570k and i haven't felt the need to OC it for anything yet. I run everything on a 1080p 27" monitor. Vsync @ 60hz every game with no problems.

As for the 670, it's a good choice but if I'm running 1080p and not really going to change it for a while then I'm not going to bother going that high. A 660ti will run just about anything on max @1080p with playable fps. With the next generations from AMD and NVIDIA just around the corner, you might want to think about this before you plunge.

16GB is a good start. I normally would rather G Skill memory as they are generally cheaper and perform just as good as the other brands. Read the reviews on newegg to see which one is best for you.

I have no suggestions for the case if you don't at least give me a clue to the size you want.

sorry ive got nothing to contribute to this thread but if you looking to sell your 4850, assuming its fully functional pm me please. I also have a pallit 4850 and found it to be extremely reliable and capable at my res. Im playing with crossfire and would like to have matching cards

well I like your list. the seasonic x-760 is a great buty or as said few above me the ax-750(or was it 850) 80plus gold is good. bthere is a hx one for silver but better get gold for your budget. i5 35700k is good and yeah go 16gb just more kick ass. if you can get the 830 it's much cheaper but the 840 is awesome.

Yeah. It really depends on what you're doing. This is normal for me.
