Upgrading gtx960 to 1660 but not happening for me!

HI, sorry probably a routine post - but any help welcomed.

Had an MSI NVIDIA 960GTX and decided to upgrade to a MSI NVIDIA1660 GTX) VEntus XS (OC edition) . Thought it should be a pretty easy upgrade,

Only issue I found was the change from 6 pins to 8 pins - after initial panic - realised that the 2 extra pins had been colied back and secured - so cut thetie and plugged in the now 8 pins. Problem is that it is not being recognised as anything but a generic PCI-E on my display adapter on device management. I did try the alternative PCI slot but same result - one monitor working oon low res as per a basic display adaptor. I did replace with 9609 in both slots and it works fine in either - the 1660 just doesnt seem to be rrecognised. I had updated the drivers from disc but no joy? Three thoughts - is it a) a dud card? if so is there nayway to tell? (b) is there an issue with the 6 and 8 pins - i didnt nuild the pC but it was a very neat job to tidy the extra pins and there is only on configuration of them that would work (also when I tried with just 6 pins - it gave no display at all just a BIOS style message that power had to be supplied to the PCI-E device - with the 8 pins - i did get basic output. (c) drivers! I did install the drivers from the disc is there some sort of removal for the 960 that i should have done before this?

Do you know what motherboard model that you have? You should download the latest driver from Nvidia website.

Define basic output. And fill out your system specs. We can't help you if we don't know if you are running on new(er) or old MB. Read this for a start - Similar problem?

The drivers for your 960 were likely old and are not recognizing the new card. The drivers on disc are often crap. Download and install the newest drivers. You should be fine.

Oh, right. UEFI card on non-UEFI mobo... If that's the case, fricken lame-sauce. And why? How hard is it to include the legacy code in a vbios?

From what I understand, UEFI vBIOS itself isn't the problem.
It's the lack of "Legacy" part in it on some of the UEFI cards that is the issue (I used GTX 1080 FE on PGA 478 and R9 390X on Socket 939).

I think MB model is key in solving this one.

If it was a UEFI/Legacy issue, the card wouldn't even POST and wouldn't work at all.

I think money is the biggest factor. I mean, there is a chance that the legacy code wouldn't fit on the vBIOS chip and they don't want to put a bigger chip on the cards. However, I'm more willing to bet the issue is they just don't want to pay to code and develop and test a legacy vBIOS. Especially when the user base putting these cards in old non-UEFI is insanely small.

No such thing as a "UEFI only" VBIOS. All UEFI compatible VBIOSes are hybrid(legacy + UEFI). Stop spreading unsubstantiated myths please. Thanks!

It's the drivers. ALWAYS uninstall the drivers BEFORE installing a new card.

Use DDU to remove all traces of previous drivers for dGPU's then start again with the install process.

Not true. "Legacy" systems still account for more than half of all gaming systems in use today.

Also not true, you need to do research. Card makers are increasingly leaning toward non-legacy vbios code as a way of pushing the public to newer platforms.

First of all, thanks to everyone who took the time and trouble to reply.

The problem has been resolved and I think it is a case of 'sticky' old drivers and a badly seated card combining to caused the confusion. I am but a simple soul. I had after multiple tries deleted the 960 drivers via ddu but when 1660 replaced and restarted no signal at all, I replaced the 960 and the drivers to see if socket was issue and was fine. Then when replacing the 1660 the old VGA issue again. Now I hindsight it is obvious the 1660 wasn't seated right after the ddu cleanse. I re read all advice and decided to simply follow the steps and record the status at each step...... and this time using the GeforceApp it did recognised a new card and downpoaded drivers that worked. Probably I screwed up the installation of drivers from the disc, and confused myself re card swapping, driver cleaning and installing, so apologies but appreciate the help as it lead me to check the process more methodically. Can think of several things that could have helped re feedback....but no complaiñs the fault was human....is me. Only lesson I can pass on is to be careful to record exactly what you did and what happened, the error more often than not is the 'man in the machine'. Cheers all.

For future reference ....

1. Download the latest driver from nvidia web site.

2. Disconnect ethernet cable to prevent Windows Update from messing anything up after reboot.

3. Uninstall all things nVidia from Control Panel / Programs

4. If you want to be thorough, can use a registry cleaner to clean out all registry references to nVidia but it's generally ok to skip .... 9 outta 10 times this step is not necessary. Alternately you can use DDU or better yet TechPowerUp's NvCleanstall (https://www.techpowerup.com/forums/...an-installer-for-nvidia-drivers-alpha.249085/). The older the drivers are that you have, the more I'd recommend doing fresh install.

5. Shut down and install card.

6. Boot and ignore any OS initiated options to install drivers .......

7. Install the latest nVidia drivers from nVidia site.

8. Shut down, connect ethernet cable and have fun.
