upgrading my cpu heatsink

I have a pretty decent one on now, but it doesnt have an installation bracket, which is freaking annoying..so to re-seat it I need to take out the whole mobo.

I'm looking to replace it, does anyone have suggestions? that cool xigmatek one isnt around any more it seems. PC is in my profile (LGA 775)

also, I found a Q9550 for $179 new..

most high end coolers i have used have required a bracket and removing the motherboard. definitely any worth recommending. tall order

i'm sure someone knows of a good one though...

Could always make life simple. Remove all your goods from the case and cut a hole in the motherboard tray to allow easy access to the backplate

Buy a case with an installation hole in the mobo tray and you don't have to pull the mobo.

What Xigmatek are you looking for that you can't find now, Ninkobwi?

the Xigmatek 1283 (I think) is one I cant seem to find any more.. I remember the xigmatek cooler having a purchasable backplate that would allow easy removal of the HS.

There's no CPU HSF I recommend more highly for performance to cost ratio. You can also get the ACK-I5361 bracket set with it, which has two benefits; better mounting pressure/motherboard support, and compatibility with i5/i7 (and other) CPUs for future upgrades.

ok arg... finally got the hs, installed it and on one core my temp dropped from 38 to 33 idle but the other core stayed 38..sigh. thought I did a good job with the thermal paste too...

core sensor may be stuck at 38*, typical issue with intel procs.

Grab real temp and prime95 and do the sensor test in realtemp.

hmm, yup that seems to be the case..core 1 got up to 37 degrees while core 2 didnt even move a decimal point. is there a way to fix it? or should I just ignore it/go by my other core.

also, thanks for saving me tons of time. i'd hate to have redone what I just did only to get the same result

As I say its typical, and intel only gives a poop if it is faulty at close to 100*C as that is when it matters to start the cores throttling features. AFAIK you cant fix it, just be happy both arent stuck

IF it makes you feel better though, by all means rant, rave, or even just get a lil pissy its ok

hah nah, its not a huge deal really... I know what this system can handle more or less... 4.ghz shouldnt push me past 60c...i wont be trying for any world records on this baby ;P though I will have more incentive to upgrade to that Q9550 now...

unless you do a bunch of encoding or want to crunch on it, Id just beat the hell out of the E8400 for free But thats more my style. You might be surprised, seems like you have the right setup for a 550 bus or so, chip willing that is

haha, yes that is a good idea.. i'll see what I can get this thing to stable. 550 fsb you think? highest i've gotten stable is 480 or so.. but that was with pretty high ram speed.

If you use one of Koolance's mounting bracket kits you will never have to again remove a mb to change hsf's or cpu's. You use thumbscrews to hold it down.
