URGENT need help deciding which intel CPU to get..

Hi fellas,

I have the opportunity to upgrade my CPU..these are my ONLY 2 choices because they are the only ones my mate has to sell me..

the only difference i can see is that..

960 is D0 and has a Bus Speed: 4.8 GT/s
965 is a C0/C1 has a Bus Speed: 6.4GT/s

And would the 965 be an "older" cpu then the 960 as far as production goes?
Can anyone else shed some light on anything else that different....?
Whats a better overclocker ?

The 965 is an Extreme Edition CPU with unlocked multipliers. The 960 is not. The 965 also has a faster QP clock.

The 960 is a newer stepping CPU, so the 965 is indeed older. Which one is the better clocker? No way of knowing without trying them out. There are C0 chips out there that clock better than D0 chips.

but where do you live? I'd suggest just getting an i7 920 d0 or i7 930

its hard to get d0,s here...

i read so many different and conflicting stories on c0/c1 and d0...man its confusing...

i think im gonna stick with the 965..

you do know that the 965 is marginally better than i7 920s and 930s?

and getting an i7 930 is easy, even in Australia... you are wasting LOTS of money going 965 unless your friend is giving it to you at 10% more than what an i7 930 costs

Then why would you want to go from a 920 to a 960/965? What's the point to spend so much money on this? If you really *have* to buy something, get another HD6870 or just save your cash for something that is actually useful.

I mean, if it cost you like 50$ and made you feel all l33t, sure, go for it. But spending this much for this? Why?

You wont notice the difference with the new processor - unless you are really into benchmarks. You'll have exactly the same experience in every other facet of your computing.

If you get that second 6870 however ...

Really man, you will gain nothing in going i7 920 to i7 965, but you will gain a lot by adding another 6870.

I've understand that you've decided to get a graphics card instead of a CPU upgrade which is the better move at this point of time, but with the system you have I would recommend that the next upgrade you do would be to upgrade to the new X68 chipset after a good amount of time from it's first release (around 6 months to a year would be best as flaws and defects would be sorted out by then under most cases) since it would seem that Intel would like to phase out the socket 1366 CPUs and replace them with socket 2011 CPUs from what I know.

Ill defiantly keep that in mind , but after this upgrade , ill keep it quite for a while till that point in time or even later..

I have the same sort of plan too, although I hope that when the X68 chipset is released that they might bring out some X68 Socket 1366 motherboards (ideally one that is better and more perfected than my current motherboard) along with the X68 Socket 2011 motherboards as I paid quite a lot for my CPU and it eats anything and everything that I throw at it when it comes down to gaming so for obvious reasons I would like to do a significant final with the motherboard if possible.

#1 We do not know until the stuff is released if it has bugs or not
#2 lga1366 DID NOT HAVE BUGS
#3 Lga1366 kept its value VERY long, so buying at the beginning would yield the best bang/buck
#4 DON'T SPECULATE, especially since lga 2011's release, plus your 1 year wait, we will end up at the end of 2012, anything can happen then

1. Even if it doesn't have bugs there will still be teething problems (GTX480 anyone?), which are most likely minor.
2. look at 1.
3. Can't argue with that, but you must remember that they started with the i7's and work their way down to i3, but in LGA2011, they start their lineup with the LGA1155 first, so the same logic might not hold for as long as the i7's.

I understand, I'm not as much as a sucker as you might think. I do intend to wait and see what actually goes down before thinking into buying into anything. I'm not saying that Socket 1366 has bugs at all and if anything the CPUs are perfectly fine (well maybe I am a bit envious of the 6 core processors like the i7 980x when compared to my i7 960 quad-core), but the motherboards can be improved to better standard which I'm sure we all know.

All I'm hoping is that the X68 will bring some very significant results for Socket 1366 CPUs such as the one I'm using. Just to make things a bit clearer I hoping some Socket 1366 motherboards will be made based on X68 chipset so I can give my i7 system a significant upgrade if it's possible assuming of course that a significantly better and improved X58 based motherboard isn't made by the time when X68 motherboards are released.

As for the Bulldozer I wouldn't always rely of what is written on paper as I've heard of Intel systems of lower spec beating the most powerful of AMD processors such as an i5 760 beating AMD's 6-core processors in gaming which doesn't necessary mean the Bulldozers will be beating everything, especially the Intel i7 980X of all processors, but one thing I feel I can say with almost certainty is there is a very great chance of the Bulldozer will dominate the laptop market as they are going to be AMD most powerful CPU yet as well as AMD's second most power efficient CPU which will only require 18 watts just for the CPU alone.

I am sure that these facts alone are self-explaining enough to tell how this will benefit laptops when it comes to power consumption, but if these processors do happen to be very powerful as they are said to be then you will start to find that Alienware may start to become dominated by New AMD Bulldozer laptop systems and may start using the Bulldozer processor for their top gaming systems. Still even this needs to wait in order to learn the whole thing.

To make things clear I'm not making any real moves other than learning the new systems when they come out or when new information is released and as for my opinion it would be that if you system is well built enough as it is there is no need to do a full upgrade such as buying into a new next generation as it is doubtful they will be any better than the current one we are already in. As for the socket 1366 X68 chipset motherboard upgrade that is just a personal interest of mine for the moment.
