usb device not recognized when usb extension cable used

I'm trying to connect Ipod Touch to PC via 10' USB extension cable, when I plug it in directly with just Apple USB Cable, its fine, but connect via extension, it fails to detect.

Could it be a power problem?

Is there a way I can make a homemade wire with enough power? Perhaps with splicing with another wire? What are my other options?

I've tried different USB ports, same thing happens.

putting it this way: if you mod it yourself and fuck up, you risk losing the device AND the PC connected to it. just run it via a short cable for now, and get the hub tomorrow.
