vega 56 water blocks

I have just up graded to water cooling on my MSI™ AMD™ Rx Vega 56 Crossfire™.
I had problems when it came to assembling then, the Bykski™ instructions are not for AMD™ RX Vega cards, it just has a general guide for GDDR module cooling and the gpu die.
Can anyone tell me if I got it right please?
I don't really want to disassemble them, but there is a very high pitch electronic screaming coming from one of the cards when in use or loading work.
I have read about coil whine, but I want to check if I have the thermal pads in the right place and weather I should add more for better performance.
I also got mixed gpu die types, I got a molded and unmolded die, it appears that the unmolded is colder than molded, maybe why they changed.
what do you think of the build please?

has two strips that are raised and I have covered them with thermal padding, that bit seems fine.
its the parts on the io side that I was thinking of, and the two below the 8 pins.
the blocks are not the best quality, the machining has lots of roughness.

First photo of the waterblock tells me yes the VRMs are being cooled going by the placement of the thermal pads.

What's cooling the back of the card? I see small squares of thermal pads on the back plate.

"coil" whine is common and without the blower you will notice it more.

im using the stock back plat and it had some pre-attached to them, there was spaces for more padding, but I didn't know if I should have put some there, would it be better to try to cover all the parts with thermal padding please?
the sound is really notible.
the photo's don't do it justice, but the lighting looks awesome in real life.

loading or unloading valley benchmark, it makes a noise like a fan belt slipping, is that normal please?

I found the instructing for the vega blocks on there website, I cant read them, but it appears they just want two strips on the mosfets only, would that be right please?

maybe the coil whine is cause by having pads in the wrong place?

Yes make sure these 2 strips of mosfets (marked in red) are making proper contact.

On the reference PCB, there is nothing on the back that actually requires extra cooling.
All the mosfets are on the front of the card, extra thermal pads on the back helps with mounting pressure and a little bit of cooling.
As for the noise, yes that is just coil wine. It shouldn't affect the operation of the card at all.

Im not so sure, it looks like you have put thermal pads on the chokes, (the bigger square semi ceramic looking things that are grey), they do not need to be cooled and its possible putting thermal pads on them has lifted the cold plate so its not in as firm a contact as it should be with the VRM's, i used EK blocks so i cant be sure unfortunately.

but coil whine is normally more noticeable on overclocked ,watercooled cards too.

personally i put the pads on the board not the cooler and the poster above has posted an adequate picture of what Chips to cover and has not covered the chokes.

Totally normal, and to be expected from any modern graphics card.

It's the exact same thermal pad layout as stock. As such, there wouldn't be any problem with it. And it's all that would be "needed"(no "need" to apply thermal pads to any of the other components he's worried about).

Also, the MOSFET drivers/phase doublers on the backside of the card can heat up quite a bit under full load. Probably not enough to warrant using thermal pads on them. But having them there anyway won't hurt anything either.

Arent 56 and 64 actually with same layout? When its reference model. Non-reference are different thing.

Coil whine wont change with cooling. Only way is 1) make it impossible for coils to move 2) replace them with different coils, 3) buy different card 4) RMA it (some manufacturers take it as reason, tho mostly you get back different card with same whine, at least I did ).

i might change them to better thermal pads at a later date, they just supplied 1mm by the looks of them, was thinking thinner ones for the chokes.
its idles at 25c now, which is a lot better now im using a 'real' thermal paste on the cpu, gone from XSPC™ k3 to Coolermaster™ maker gel 11w/m.k.
highest so far is 45c.
i did have the gpu's as the last stop of the loop, it seemed to not be flowing, i then had a brief leak and changed it round to gpu's, rads, cpu and reservoir.
the flows was good, had a spiral tornado going in the pipe when filling it.

Pretty much.
Also the reference cards from AMD actually have no thermal pads on the back plate, so there is no real issue without them.
MSI added those thermal pads on the back out of good will basically, and at worse they are doing nothing

Now for the front of the card, the only "issue" with putting thermal pad on the chokes is it might interfere with the contact on the mosfets, and this is due to the thermal pad thickness.

the choke area is recessed, but your right as they only have 1mm padding.

They(chokes) don't give off heat mate. The Vrms don't really give off that much heat either due to their size number and spec , 10-15 watts of waste heat max each one, so they don't need much by way of cooling either.

I make a minor mistake each time I rebuild, or re think my new way.
This time I put my out thermocouple in the wring place.

I would count you're issues as similar to mine.
Annoying but probably not technically causing an issue directly and possibly a job for next time but that's upto you.

well, I have rebuilt the system, this time I remembered to wash the radiators out of there dust encrusting, hair drier really works good on copper.
have yet to test the gpu's out as i'm going to wait till tomorrow before I start fiddling again, but it appears that a 40c has changed to 32c at idle, and that's the gpu vrm.
I update on the coil whine tomorrow.

I am thinking of getting some 1mm and 0.5mm thermal pads, but the price seems a bit much to achieve nothing.

well, interesting idea of using the vega to under watt the gpu, I tested it with 110w per card, I got back 60-70 fps far cry 5 at 4k on high, which is what it was doing with them set to run using 240w per card, think I might fiddle some more.
it is glitching a bit.

I had the idea that using the vega 56 powerplay table on a vega 64 to see if the vega 64 would clock as high with less power, obviously that is not the case as it just scales with wattage.

People usually implant 64 on 56, not reverse. Reason is to clock HBM higher.

It's possible to just mess with voltage and power curves down to 120 watts anyway I couldn't get lower stable in a game but it clocks low too.

yer, good idea if your using two cards though, I like most would think of overclocking them both to the max, without thinking that at about 2000mhz effective far cry 5 in my case (cpu is ryzen 1700) that you don't need all that juice to get the frames.
I must run some tests on other games, but my crossfire library is a bit small.

I did some real cheap case modification, cheap carbon fibre wrap for £5 and a couple tiger car decal for £1.50 each.
bit fiddley but looks nice.
