Just put in the order.
Ryzen 5600 - $135
Gskill Ripjaws 32GB (2x16GB) CAS18 3600 - $87
ASRock B550 PG VELOCITA - $130

Went with essentially @eidairaman1 recommendation re the motherboard. It is backordered, but at 40% off, I'll try waiting a bit.

Thanks for all the thoughts. Let me know what you think with regard to reusing that RM650x PSU.

Just saw the thread now. If you get tired of waiting for the Asrock, I can vouch for the B550 A-Pro. It's solid and plays perfectly with Linux.

I dropped a Prime 650 Gold on the 5800, you should be good to go with the RM650

I’m seeing some review extremes. I wonder if those 1 stars just needed to reset their ram though, based on the comments I’ve seen re this board’s ram slots being a weak point.
Funny I didnt have an issue, bear in mind that board You are going with just like the Steel Legend has the ROG Style Ram Slot (1 side has the mechanical lock the other doesnt, you insert the ram on the side without the lock first.) i also Do a Clear Cmos on every motherboard before very first boot to remove any settings AsRock may have made during random QC testing...

That will be new to me. Not sure how obvious it is in situ, but many thanks for the heads up.

Good tip, thanks! I wouldn’t have thought to proactively do that.

My FX rig was the 1st board to have the said slots, the clear cmos I've been doing Since 1999.

CPU
Wilco on stepping up to 5600. It's only $35 more at newegg right now at $135 on sale. 5700X caught my eye at $199, but I presume it's not worth the additional cost from a value perspective.

Memory
Leaning towards Gskill Ripjaws 32GB 3600 cas18 at ~$88. I may as well spend the only ~$40 extra now then wish I did some years later. I'll consider any sales pitch to go 1/3rd more $ for cas16 if it's worth doing so from a bang-for-buck perspective.

Motherboard
@AusWolf ASUS TUF B550-PRO, I presume? Hum, only $5 more at ~$145. I've always thought of MSI motherboards as a bit rough around the edges, but with so many positive reviews and this being the most matured point of AM4, I kind of wanted to go non-Asus this time around. Less drama for $5 more is a compelling argument though, if that's indeed the case.
@eidairaman1 Hum, AsRock B550 Steel Legend even on sale is another step up on cost. I'll still check it out. In the past I've always been too wary of AsRock (and Biostar) to ever go that route, but AsRock has gotten better mindshare for me in recent times.

PSU
My quite venerable, now totally dead build kept getting additionally iffy over the last few years, but it was still quite usable, so I eked along. For the last few months of it's life, I put in a new RM650x to see if that would fix anything, with the rational that I could use it for a new build later if I had to go that route. No change. For the last month or so of the computer's life, when I would press the power button, it would power on with GPU fans at full speed (others fans at constant undervolt), but nothing beyond that e.g. no drive detection, no post. If I left it for a bit in that state, then held the power button to cut it off and then tried turning it on again, it would then turn on successfully and could be used. Once it became dead as a doornail, I went though the effort of looking over the motherboard (SPCR-spec quite build, so a bit of a pain to take apart). Even though I didn't see any bad capacitors, I'm presuming something on the motherboard front finally died.

TLDR: I plan to use the RM650x from my old build -- unless you guys may feel there's considered concern my old hardware may have damaged it. Let me know what you think. The last thing I want is to damage new hardware. Side note: Covid killed the last shop in town I'm aware of that might have been able to do a PSU test for me.

GPU
I'll continue to use a Kepler from my old build for now.

Storage
MX500 from old build is fine for now. I think I have a half-length 512GB NVMe too. For sure some additional 2.5 SSDs. And I have a multiplicity of 3TB work-retired rust and a NAS for slow storage. All set on this front for my current purposes.

Case
P182 from old build. Fine for now at least.

Heatsink and Fans
Thermalright Ultra 120 and Sycthe S-Flex and Slipstream fans from old build. Fine for now at the very least.

OS
I've been running Linux exclusively for my personal stuff for quite some time now. Steam on Linux scratched most of the gaming itch. I may bother to throw Win10 on a separate partition, probably only once desire to play a truly WinOS-only game overcomes my apathy. (I did WinOS desktop admin work long ago, and Microsoft basically annoyed me into going down the Linux path. For some time in my professional life, WinOS desktop and sys admin work is gloriously someone else's annoyance.)
Those specs look good but i have questions on the GPU

What kepler GPU is this - some older GPU's do not support UEFI booting and will cause you issues with no display on default settings
To be honest, most 600 and 700 series GPU's dont even display on many ryzen systems without locking PCI-E to gen 2.0 first, and when they do work they lack UEFI support and won't give any display til the OS has loaded on UEFI systems

The 650W PSU will be perfectly fine, this is a very low wattage CPU
Us HWinfo to verify how much lifespan the SSD's have left, the MX500 doesn't have a whole lot of TBW (Terabytes written) so it may be wearing out, or it may have years left.

True 120 should be fine, older designs aren't great on modern CPU's but the 5600 (and 5700 non X) are so cold running they don't care, you could run it passively on them

Gigabyte Windforce 770. Cause for concern?
Not sure yet if I can mount the Ultra to AM4. Not response back as of yet from Thermalright. Perhaps I'll pick up a Thermalright Frost Commander 140 @freeagent mentioned if I can find one on the cheap, just 'cause.
Thanks for those other insights too.

Went with a WD SN850X 1TB, with heatsink, for $110. It's overkill for what I need, but non-bait-and-switch options, even at 500GB instead of 1TB, got near enough to $100 that I just went with it.

Probably wouldn't have bought an SSD if the backordered motherboard's ETA hadn't been delayed until the end of this week. The 2TB Kingston NV2 caught my eye though at $109, and the rest is history. Dangerous, slippery slope....

What are you using the computer for? nVME for gaming is a gimmick, you won't see any real performance increases vs 2.5" except in synth benchmarks.

A 1TB MX500, for example, is ~$70 though. I considered that sort of dollar amount to be close enough to the non-heatsink 1TB SN850X price of $100 to induce me to just spend the extra, and I'm not even sure if that's TLC. I can unlazy and work of notch of overtime to make up the difference. And I wanted a no-drama way of getting a non-QLC drive.

After decades of being aware of but not using them, I don’t mind trying this one at this price.

Could you be specific in where you have personally experienced a horrible aspect with respect to their bios? Ad hominem provides limited insight.

if all you do is set xmp and reboot and never go into bios again, any brand of mobo is fine.

for overclocking ASRock is just harder to navigate/has outdated UI

but honestly overclocking is dumb these days anyway, net gains aren't worth the hassle for any cpu or ram imo.

just set xmp and reboot and be happy.

@DrCR - I have this very same board - the B550 PG Velocita -- and have no real hard-line complaints with its performance. It's been a great performer and doesn't look half bad, either. As far as nit-picky things go (and I knew this going in to buying it), my biggest complaint with this board is that it actually has no BIOS flashback button on the read I/O - its bigger sibling, however - the X570 PG Velocita - does feature BIOS flashback. My second grip with the board and something I didn't know about before buying it (being that this was my first ASRock board) has to be the BIOS. They aren't exactly user friendly, there's no "EZ Mode" feature, and everything is buried underneath sub menus and the like.

These small annoyances aside, however, it's been a great board.

Insightful, thanks! I expected as much. At this point in AM4’s lifecycle, I’ll likely never even do a bios update. If I can’t use keyboard commands to navigate the submenus though, like an old school bios, I’ll audibly grumble about it to myself lol.

@Gmr_Chick did you drop your nic setting from 2.5Gb to 1Gb or anything special like that?
