I was using an older Motorola branded SB6121 4x4 modem (pre arris purchase) which has been as rock solid as you can get. I have not had to reboot it in years except for the odd power outage. It was working great for my 100/15 cable plan. Recently cox upped things to 150/30 for the same plan. Running late night tests, I was seeing around 130/30 which left me wondering.. would a 16x4 upgrade help in any way? I doubted it as the 4x4 should be good up to 170's.

Fast forward, I bought a refurb Arris SB6183 16x4. This turned out to be a dud. Random disconnects, speeds were all over the place. Likely just a defective reburb as it should have been great.

During the return process and more research, I found Motorola still makes modems. I had no idea. They had the MB7420 16x4 with a newer broadcom chipset for less than the arris SB6183 brand new. So I ordered one up. Very nice build quality and the power button was a nice touch over the arris which had no power button. Finally, having a nice modem running, I was able to run some tests and I was averaging 160 / 30ish which I was never able to see on the previous 4x4 modem (bested by around 30 down average)

In short, the new modem made a bit of a difference and at the same time, I upgraded my internet service through cox to 300/50 which the old modem could never handle. With a well connected family of 5, I am very happy with the upgrade and service upgrade.

If you are in the market for a modem that can handle speeds up to 686/123, take a serious look at the motorola MB7420. I feel it is a better choice vs. the arris 6183 because of the newer chipset and full band tuner.
