I doubt a cow would do the job I've encountered with repasting a GPU. I've only ever repasted 2 GPUs but in both cases they used way too much TIM and it was a big mess to clean up. I don't know why they use so much.

Yeah all my other cards were pretty much the same. Way to much paste all over the place.

Edit: Now I wanna pull the cooler and see my pretty Fiji and check the paste...Damn you all!!!

somthing wrong there... performance on titan cannot be compared to 970....

Well most ppl do 1080p@120/144hz i do 2560x1440@120hz and i feel the Titan do a better job on this resolution with memory hungry games than the GTX 970 did.

Had it since September I guess? I use the wonderful Target Temp in the drivers and set it to 60 and the fans never top 50% fan no matter what I throw at it, idles at 32-34

OH don't get me wrong I really WANT to just change the paste just to change it like I would always do anyway (and takes some naked pics of Fiji of course ;) ) The temps are great so I can't justify it yet.(I really want some naked pics of my Fijo tho....)

somthing wrong there... performance on titan cannot be compared to 970....
Probably talking about a old Titan. A 960 can trade blows at folding with a Titan if the Titan is on stock clocks. Now on DP on the other hand, Titan will kick their arse all over the place.

Reason I'm glad Pascal bring compute back.

No kidding, even EVGA brand cards are a mess with thermal.

speaking of overly applied paste on VGA cards, I think I better check my 970 G1. Probably will re-apply a new one once the warranty is passed like my trusty old 760.

I'm thinking of changing the TIM for my aging 7970 references with MX-4.... but I also read somewhere the reference TIMs are the best ones and I don't want to risk losing the originals... anyone have experience changing the reference 7970's? thx

well, duno what to tell ya, the best TIM according to all benchs and tests is liquid metal, as far as i know there is no cards using this tim as reference tim or well as the stock paste,

if you want to replace the TIm of you video card and do not know how to, please look for instructional videos on Youtube or professional help, someone that has done it before lad...
MX 4 is one of the best rated TIM....

I know how to but just wondering if it's worth changing it. I had my card for 4 years and my temps reach 90 Celsius while gaming (yet still stable...). So I thought changing the TIM would help a little.

Everything I find is normal, but I thought changing the TIM might help the cooling a bit and even improve on performance. That's what I read on some web sites so far.

correct! fresh application and proper methods may lower your temps, helping to get more from your hardware! if overclocking... cooling is a must!

you don't have an idea how wrong you are my friend... lowering, cooling and improving temps is always good...

One of my 970s is idling at 28'c while the other is at 35'c. Both cards are running with Prolimatech PK-3 Thermal Compound. My 3930k is jumping between 30-33'c idle - same PK-3 Thermal Compound.

If you buy a mercedes or bmw and start to modify it you risk ruining it instead to bring something extra.
Why change something that already walk to work properly

I agree the old video cards that require truly changed thermal compound
The difference in a new video card paste MX-4 does not think it will be 1-3 degrees lower, which does not seem so much worthwhile and risk

Regards,
Talking about the TIM, temps wise any on air I can't stand. Especially ASUS cards....darn STRIX screams like a banshee while folding and is a hot mess even with Gelid Extreme on it. Plus, so darn stupid that the air cooler don't touch the VRAM chips. Reason I can't wait to smack the water block to it so it shuts up.

Talking about folding in F@H, sorry to inform that yes my GTX960 OC to 1540MHz was kicking my original Titan at stock arse all over the place at folding. I'm ranked 3rd in nVidia slot on OCN in TC up against GTX780s. So it hauls it little arse like a turbo smacked to it. Still got plans to BIOS mod it to allow me to up its volts and push it farther since I do have an AIO smacked to it.
GTX970 even puts out more points, they tend to average 300k PPD+.
My OG Titan on a good day would only get 150K-200K PPD and eat watts for breakfeast.

Currently got one guy with a GTX950 that has a fire to it or something. Thing is flying in TC. Since it kicking GTX770 arse butt all over the place since he currently holding 1st place in GPU-Wild.

Folding don't give crap on VRAM size or speed. It straight down to core speed. And currently the Maxwells are king in that area when it comes to folding.
Now BOINCing on certain projects, my Titans are still powerhouses since some projects require their DP compute performance since Maxwell got gimped in that area.

I don't have these cards for gaming. I OC them to wall and they fold 24/7. So I beat the crap out of cards for giggles.

have expected more problems with AMD ones, Sapphire and also galaxi,
intel side, the heat king award comes for asus and some MSI cards .... EVGA is still on the decent side of temps....

just no ....384bits vs 128bit...
2500+ cuda cores against almost like 1500...
6GB against 2 gb or max 4Gb ...
give your facts straight ...GTX 960 is not comparable even to a 760...

Regards,

You might want to get your own facts straight, the lil 960's can crunch some series proteins OC'd 1500+, 384bit & 128bit mean next to nothing folding if it did then how can a 256bit 970 out fold a Titan as well.

Still got plans to BIOS mod it to allow me to up its volts and push it farther since I do have an AIO smacked to it.

the 960 has been a surprising lil beast of a folding card for the price point (glad I snagged one for $150), still need to watercool it though

Benchmark Scores well I've fried a 775' P4 12 years ago, that counts?
If you buy a mercedes or bmw and start to modify it you risk ruining it instead to bring something extra.
Why change something that already walk to work properly

I agree the old video cards that require truly changed thermal compound
The difference in a new video card paste MX-4 does not think it will be 1-3 degrees lower, which does not seem so much worthwhile and risk
of course if a get a Mercedes no Mather which model i'll swap engines with C63 AMG and maybe add a bigger Kompressor, wilwood brakes, take out all seats leaving just one Bride Buck Seat and logically a giantic #666 on both doors lad... :D

ok... i have repasted my old 760 on the second day ... temps lowered 5c at idle and 12C on max temps... isn't noticeable yet?

Well the current 680 i got on a giveaway here... was tested as it came, everything stock, temps were pretty acceptable for a reference cooler model, then decided to give a refresh, take out everything on the video card, a deep cleaning was done on the cooler and fins and everything, then a repaste, temps were incredible reduced, couldn't remember on idle but on full load and some OC the temps dropped almost 20C because the old past may be dried or broken bond don't know, but the point is that cleaning, repasting is never a bad idea, mostly when you know what you are doing, abnd also is risky when people have never done it before, because taking out 8+ screws and cleaning a cooler is nothing complicated lad...

well intended for gaming is pretty odd that a titan will be beaten by a 960... dont know about folding lad...

One of my 970s is idling at 28'c while the other is at 35'c. Both cards are running with Prolimatech PK-3 Thermal Compound. My 3930k is jumping between 30-33'c idle - same PK-3 Thermal Compound.

What did it look like when you re-pasted the 970's?

What did it look like when you re-pasted the 970's?

Its like when you accidentally squish a snail under your shoe when youre walking through the park at night after its rained
