My bad. I had trouble understanding the context of your question. IMO it looked a hell of a lot better than the 6970s from XFX that i had prior to the 970s. MSI's factory pasting was quite neat.

Temps didn't drop a huge amount as the 970s run cool anyway. Probably 2-3'c difference 4'c at the most maybe

I haven't had a single Gigabyte card that didn't have a factory pasting that didn't look like a whole 3 gram tube of TIM was drenching the chip. Re-pasting will definitely help.

XFX cards were bad in that regard. I have no idea what sort of thermal paste they use but it was pretty thick application of it. Repasting my 6970s with MX-4 dropped temps by roughly about 5'c... It stopped the top card running at 80-90'c anyway

What did it do for your 980? And what paste did you use? I have AC5 and MX4 at my disposal.

I finally got it out of my system. I re-pasted with mx4. Just had to do it. Temps are the same so far. Maybe there's a little curing time going on or something. Not disappointed though. I know it was done right. I used about half what the factory blobbed on.

My EVGA 970 acx 2.0 is strange it idles at 70c and dont turn on the coolers ,even crashed nvidia drivers when surfing internet.

Then instaled evga precision X collers at 1300 rpm, and 31c aways

Almost all graphics cards I have seen WAY overdue it with TIM. They just put a massive glob over the die and its usually squished all over the place. I've had a bunch of cards over the years and all makes seem to do it. I think if memory serves me the worst I ever saw was an old XFX Radeon HD 5870 I had. The issue is that typically you have to remove that little sticker that says "WARRANTY VOID IF REMOVED" or something similar. Just be sure and verify with the maker if you can open that card and change the TIM before you start. I will say that re-doing the TIM almost always gives you a beneficial temp drop of several degrees. I've been thinking about re-doing my ASUS 980 Ti but it stays so cool already I've been blowing it off. I usually use MX-4 paste.

Yeah , I made it in the past too,tks for the mx4 advice.

My case is aways opened door by defalt, so ar circulatios is inefective, so... I just put an 8" noctua cooler in front case to force air entrance,and idle temps droped from 62c to 40c

So it seems this card need a little air circulation on 2D /idle mode.

Yeah I have two intake and two exhaust.

What? The 128 bit bus is not to be taken literally. Having gone from a 760 to a 960, the 960 has outperformed it in everything except benchmarking,,,and heat and power use. The 760 excels at running hotter and using more power.

Is what I did was the line method going opposite the direction of the heat pipes. No change could be because were having unseasonably warm weather in Chicago right now. So higher ambient.

The 960 is almost as fast as a 770 (1536 shaders), the 760 only has 1152 shaders vs. 1024 Maxwell shaders on the GTX 960, so no, I don't think so. The GTX 960 should be clearly faster.

Yeah, and general graphics engine vs. specialized gaming engine, everyone knows by now Maxwell is very efficient in games, or should know at least. Also the GTX 960 is the direct successor to the 760.

Dude, I already told you, Maxwell bus sizes are not to be taken literally. The 128 bit bus is about equal to 184 bus size in operation. The 256 bit busses are about at 330 in operation. That is what their compression technology does.

It does seem like MX4 has a little curing time. Idle is the same 26c-27c. Gaming I went from the low 70's to the high 60's after 4 or 5 days. Gigabyte must use some very good thermal compound and the windforce cooling solution is excellent.

Gigabyte's Windforce is a excellent cooler, i would like to try the Windforce 2X, i have never gotten a card with this cooler,
windforce 3x is pretty excellent despite is pretty loudly .... aint problems with loud units, but much people there are like silent lovers...

bedding process maybe ... for those results on temps... room temperature could do a huge difference there lad, ambient temps do affect all results...

Oh I know things will be different this summer with ambient temps. Right now ambient is 22.2. Just a cool running card compared to my last one.

my nvidia cards idle with the fans off.. the bottom card now shows 28 C the top one 33 C..

something is wrong with yours or the way they idle.. maybe they aint really idling.. by idle i mean browsing and the like..

something is amiss..

yep, best pair: thermal paste and cooler performance. Gigabyte cooling solution is pretty good, if your temp not so good you must skip something like better paste, better contact pressure or better airflow
