Hi,

Jan 31st is my birthday and I am thinking of treating me right by upgrading the video card. (Nothing else it worth upgrading tbh!)

However I dunno whether this is the right time to get one, because the new cards were just released and the prices might drop in a couple of months.

I currently have a HD5770, a 550W PSU with 22A each on +12V (which says it can deliver 485W from +12V) and the other specs listed in the System Specs.

these are my options. not saying a specific brand, but these seem to be the reference design and the cheapest i can find online. (i live in japan)

玄人志向 HD5850 JPY11600 ($138): this is a local Japanese brand, the same brand as my 5770. and this is overclocked as well. 760/4200
Sapphire HD5870 JPY16980 ($202)
Sapphire or Gigabyte HD6870 JPY18800 ($223)
Gigabyte GTX480 JPY22400 ($266)
HIS HD6950 JPY27800 ($331)
Sapphire HD6970 JPY33900 ($403)
玄人志向 GTX560 JPY26800 ($319): this is a local Japanese brand, the same brand as my 5770
Palit GTX570 JPY33430 ($398)

what would u suggest i buy? it seems the PSU can handle all of them in a single GPU setup. maybe i can put a couple of HD5850's in there, but doubt it. (mobo supports only CF btw)

and i hate noise! i want something that i can't hear. the 5770 fan, even at the lowest speed, is the loudest fan in my PC. :(

i am hoping the sell the 5770 later, but not anytime soon.

p.s.
the 5850 seems to be a killer deal, but how long before it gets outdated? i game at 1080p. also, i'd not wanna upgrade the PSU because it is an added cost.

p.p.s
i don't really have a NEED for an upgrade. it is just the upgrade itch, but i dun wanna spend an unnecessary amount of money.

That figure with JPY is the price. JPY = Japanese Yen

I also posted the prices in USD to get an idea.

I'd say a HD5870 or HD5850 would probably make the best upgrade for the price :toast:

You mentioned fan speed and noise, whichever one you get take a look into getting an Accelero Xtreme Plus.

If can get them cheap enough, best upgrade for price would just be a 2nd 5770 + 2 AXP's. Remember 2x 5770's = ~5850/GTX460

I agree. And to add to that, the 5850 is able to be OC'ed to 5870 speeds and perform on par with the 5870. With that in mind, I suggest the 5850 with it's considerably lower price compared to the other cards mentioned.

Here's a chart to show how each card performs compared to the others.

Funny thing is, a 5770 is pretty much the same price as the 5850. i was waiting waiting and waiting for the 5770 prices to fall. when 5770 prices fell by like JPY4000, 5850 prices fell by a massive JPY18000+. 5850 was more than twice as expensive than the 5770 i bought, which was the cheapest one i could find those days.

Yuck! Get the 5850, then sell your current 5770 to someone that you know locally. Let the market work to your favor.

At about $76 apiece for the AXP(price listed the link JR posted), and the cost of the 5770, he can get a 5850 for less money and sell the 5770 he already has, making the 5850 even less expensive.

he already said he really doesn't need to upgrade, he just has the "itch". Doesn't sound to me like he really needs to upgrade that much.

XFX has double life-time warranties on thier video cards. I don't think it matters what country you are in.

You get a warranty the entire time you have the card and so does the person you sell it to (if you do).

oh great.

one more question though. would a 5850 be able to handle Crysis 2 with max settings (dun want crazy AAs though)? that is the game i wanna play. what do you think? should i wait till it is released to make the purchase. like i said, i really dun have to upgrade, just want a nice birthday present. :)

sigh.

i bet the prices will fall too by then and better driver support for HD6000 series cards as well. i don't see geforce 500 series getting any big boosts from drivers because it is the same thing as 400.

I might be wrong, but I'm willing to bet crysis 2 wont be as hardware power hungry as crysis was. It is being ported to the ps3 and xbox.

I might be wrong, but I'm willing to bet crysis 2 wont be as hardware power hungry as crysis was. It is being ported to the ps3 and xbox.
can you say it will be less demanding because it is being ported to other platforms? they can just use "cheaper" textures and less eye-candy in consoles, right? i believe Crytek prefers PC as THE platform.

ok, this is not going anywhere. it is not about crysis. it is about my birthday present. damn i never thought it would be this hard to choose something for myself!

But in the same aspect it could be poorly coded needing much more powerful hardware.

I would assume Crytek would have learned with crysis, but we all know what you open yourself up to when you assume something.
