The 3870 is a waste of money and only an ATI fanboy would buy one.

Go read this review, carefully.

The 3870 is a piece of crap in all aspects. It's only advantage is slightly lower power draw, but thats not nearly enough to make up for being 20% slower per dollar than the 8800GT.

And the kicker, even though the 3870 has lower power draw, it's 17% slower per watt. Less efficient architecture!

Thanks a lot for this info - that was just the thing i needed to hear to know what i will go for

first i was a Nvidia fanboy but now Im neutral i think 8800GT 512 and HD3870 are both useless
at your res i would recommend a 8800GT 256 or a HD3850

(and otherwise ill would go for an HD3870)

I am a Dell fan boy tbh :p jokes on you.

I loved the "infraction" too. hahaha!

I'll tell you who the tool is m8, all you thick damn yanks. I could have built the same machine i bought for ~£80 less than i paid, but this way i dont need to arse about putting it together, its got a on site warrenty and i get £180 worth of OS.... yeah, i'm a totaly tool...

J.

Well, I think you've got some anger issues. Anyways, in the states you can always build a much cheaper/better system rather than buying a crappy Dell. Not to mention that a fair majority of members here actually enjoy putting our systems together. Oh, and I'm a proud
yankee who usually respects others from around the world. It would be great if you could do the same. The "thick dumb yanks" comment is truly not needed...

My 8800GT comes tomorrow. I'm immediately replacing the cheap TIM with MX-2, and increase the fan speed with Rivatuner. That should take care of any heat issues.

no it won't and put I AS-5 on mine turned the fan up and still broke 80c. The 8800 gts cooler is better at 70 percent it keeps a oced gpu at 58c and you can hardly hear it. The 8800 gt cooler is worth about 2 dollars. You would be better off removing the plastic shroud and puting your spot cooler under it.

trying to future proof my system, and the cooler is a real important factor to me because everything is at least 10 degrees hotter for me here.

Your the one with the Dell and proud of it aint you? I mean common 2.33ghz and a 1300 series card !? you'll have one heck of a time trying to overclock that too which is where c2d is at... there are plenty of English users on theses fourms I wonder what they think about Dell over there.. just asked someone he said he woould never buy a pre-built, especially not a dell. dell does have some good prices they also have thier things that are marked up.. overall if you shop right you can do better with some online stores.

If you had custom built that computer of yours, you could overclock it and it would pwn what you have atm.

I'm from the UK and would never buy dell either

They're not bad on paper. You can get a decent C2D system, 2Gb of RAM, plenty of HD space etc for a reasonable price.

But come to upgrade - the PSU sucks, the motherboard won't overclock anything, the RAM will be bad quality. IIRC they even sometimes use custom PSU plugs for their hardware so you can't upgrade easily.. wtf.

As Wazzle says, cant beleive anyone who would wanna play crisis smooth would go for the HD3870 (yes I owned one for a week before this GT), there is no doubting it's excellent bang for buck and a decent performer but bang for buck only really counts if it can do ALL the jobs you bought it for :D

Gonna run and hide now before all the fanboi's come after me

Sadly its the price when compared to the 8800GT or even new GTS, it's still a decent card in my opinion.

A warm fart on a cold day would do better at cooling the PCB of an 8800GT than the stock cooler, in fact.....TBH it's criminal to even call it a cooler, more like tin foil with a kids toy airplanes propellor superglued to it :D

that is my problem, i live in a tropical country, my 7900 GS ideas @ 55 degrees and it has a non reference (better) cooler. when its @ 600/ 930 it gets to 71 degrees. i cant afford to buy a card and lose it 2 weeks later to heat cause its goign to cost me @ least 50 US to ship it back and prolly another 30 to receive it again. there is no money in the budget for a uprated cooler (curse living in a 3rd world country and being unemployed). i really wanted to spend no more than 200 but if a little more will give me more performance so be it.
