Hello everyone,

I've decided to build again a vintage gaming PC for pre XP period and install Windows 98SE with the latest unofficial service pack and tweaks.

I own a Sempron 2600+ with ASROCK K7VT4A PRO which supports up to 333 MHz FSB. I also own an Athlon 3200+ XP cpu which is 400 MHz FSB from my old build which I withdrew back on 2010 when I bought my Phenom II. His motherboard GA-7N400PRo2 is dead so... I can''t use it...

The 3200+ will run on the motherboard at 333 MHz FSB?

I don't see why it wouldn't run at that..... just a little slower maybe. Just bump up the multiplier, if it has one.
How much RAM do you have for the beast?

Wow, that's a proper retro build. :respect:

If you can get hold of a Pentium 2 or AMD K6 PC for that real authentic feel then so much the better. Might be time to raid a museum. :p

I note the motherboard's CPU QVL suggests that CPU is supported, but at 333MHz. If you don't have the latest BIOS update, you may have to update that.

Thank you all.

I've got news. Today I was digging up my uncle's basement and I found an abandoned system since 2009. The system consists the following GA-7VT600P-RZ, Sempron 3000+. The board is compatible with 3200+ XP!!!
The system had 2 GB Ram, but the one stick is dead. The system isn't posting with this stick. 1 GB RAM is enough I think for Windows 98SE. :p
Also the gpu is dead, (Nvidia 5200LE, haha another one!). I managed to boot it, by connecting the 3850 AGP.
I will buy an 9600XT!
Also one other bad thing is that I cannot find where is my Audigy ES. So, I'll buy the Audigy 2 ES.
The system has a sata WD 320GB with Windows XP PRO SP3 installed back on 2008. If I set it to IDE mode I will be able to install Win98 or I will need an IDE drive?

It very well could make a difference if he's to install Win98 on it. TBH that system is probably to new for Win98. I predict massive driver issues.

I have a retro DOS 6.22 - Windows 3.11 which I build 13 years ago and I found it on Sunday.
I don't have a VGA cable to test it, but it posts.
The system is a Celeron 400, with DTK PRM-201 motherboard (with both socket 370 and slot 1), 32 MB Ram, 6GB Seagate,on board gpu, SoundBlaster PCI 64. It needs only a new CD-ROM driver and an FDD cable. I'm thinking to install to another HDD Windows 95 OSR2.5 and to buy a Virge DX with 4MB RAM.

You plop a Pentium III (preferebly Tualatin) in that beast and install Windows 98 on it and make that your Windows 98 SE machine. It will flyyyyyyy. Find the 1.4Ghz part, which was an absolute beast. Faster than first gen Pentium 4, and even some later P4s!

EDIT: No AGP though. Aww. :(

I know. He still need proper drivers for the controller if he wants to install anything on it. I have a feeling stock Windows 98 SE did not ship with drivers for a motherboard made in 2005.

Ah, this reminds me of a 486 DX/4 PC with a glorious 16MB RAM and WFW3.11 that was still being used by the company I worked for to print labels. The spatious 200MB HDD was clearly on its way out judging by the tunefully modulating bearing noise and it was still going in 2002, when I left the company, bless. I know it was finally retired a while later though, when I got invited to a meetup by someone who works there.

Just exactly what @Black Flag stated. The AMD 3200+ XP is a Socket A chip...........I've got 2 of them right now. They made two different Socket A 3200's. One was a 333 front bus and the other was a 400 front bus.

They also made Socket 754 3200 chips.

Yeah I recall now. I went from 2400xp to 3800xp because of the Athlon x64.
I stand corrected :)

here i thought i had one of the most powerful 98 machines a little over a decade ago, p4 2.3ghz overclocked from 2ghz, 9800pro, 1gb ram or possibly 2gb... one day it bsod'd on boot for NO REASON, switched it to win2k, it was for the better

these parts arent really vintage, 98 will limit which gfx drivers you can use & which games you can play, it holds back the hardware, sometimes even the inverse... the dx9 hardware is too new to support certain old games or it would cause artifacts on some

(speaking of athlonxp, i have a barton-m overclocked to 2.4ghz from 1.6ghz stock, certainly beats that p4, but one processing using max usage will actually cause others & the OS to freeze up, this didnt happen on the p4 which proves that hyperthreading was quite useful)

Back on 2001 (December) I built my PC on my first year to University with the following specs.

Athlon 1900+ XP
GA-7DXR+
Hercules Geforce 3 Ti200
256 DDR SDRAM
40 GB HDD WD 7200rpm
Pioneer 105s DVD Rom
SB Audigy ES

I installed Windows 98 SE and I used this installation until November 2002 when I switched to Windows 2000 PRO. I also retained the Windows 98SE HDD until 2004 for gaming.

So I think there will be no issues with games from 1997 to 2002...

Thanks to an awesome member, which I won't say at the moment, sent me a link to post here for the OP.

Check here to see if your 3200 chip has the locked multiplier:

http://fab51.com/cpu/barton/athlon-e24.html

Give that link a shot @Black Flag and you should know if your chip will run "downclocked" to 333.

Id personally Install XP on that machine, it will run the best on XP and support alot more games etc.

I to still have a Skt A system here, with a OC 2100+, 1GB or 1.5GB RAM DDR333 and a FX5700 Video card. ill have to take pics i guess.

Apart from drivers. Seriously, the board is several years newer than the one listed here. Drivers will be an issue.
