Vista Diablo2LOD Help!

I cannot run Diablo 2 LOD in software mode in Vista. I already have the latest patch installed. When I open the prog, it thinks about it for a couple seconds, spins up the CD and then nothing. It's running in task manager, but not on the tool bar. I found a couple suggestions online, i.e. "run diablo2.exe, then game.exe, then vid test and it will work", but these are not helping. Does anyone know something for sure that works?!

rightclick on the exe/ Set as run in XP mode, and click run as admin.

Cool, it works good for harware mode now, but it's a little sluggish... sooooooo, I'd like to try and run it in software 2D mode, but that's not working. Any suggestions for that?
