So, after being out of gaming for like 10 years (since i got married) i am now am ready to build a dedicated gaming rig with the emphasis on VR.

BUDGET (and country you are buying them in)
maybe 5,000 USD, and all stuff will be bought in the USA.. probably overmuch but im buying pretty much a whole new rig and that price includes the VR gear (hopefully)

PURPOSE OF THE BUILD
games. period. i will keep my current daily driver for everything else.

ITEMS YOU NEED/ALREADY HAVE
Have
:
2x 1080ti (i will upgrade that at some point of course)
EVGA P2 850 watt if needed ill get a new one.. this is gold rated, plat or titanium would be nice)
ratt 9 mouse

Need: (thanks to oxrufiioxo for this inital list)

mobo : Gigabyte - Z390 AORUS MASTER ATX LGA1151 Motherboard

cpu : Intel - Core i9-9900K 3.6 GHz

cpu cooling : Corsair - H115i RGB PLATINUM 97 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler

case : Phanteks - ENTHOO EVOLV X GLASS (Black) ATX Mid Tower Case

gaming keyboard
: Corsair - K70 RGB RAPIDFIRE Wired Gaming Keyboard

ram : Corsair - Vengeance RGB Pro 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 Memory

boot/OS drive : Samsung - 970 Evo 500 GB M.2-2280 Solid State Drive

Game drive : Samsung - 860 Evo 2 TB 2.5" Solid State Drive

misc drive : 2 x Western Digital - Black 4 TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive (RAID 1)

monitor Gigabyte - AORUS AD27QD-SA 27.0" 2560x1440 144 Hz Monitor

VR gear: Valve index full kit with 2 base stations. preorder

OVERCLOCK OR NOT?
of course :)

OS will be win10 pro

so, real issue (maybe) is intel or amd. no brand loyalty so whatever will provide best performance now and for the next few years. i know intel is the single tread king right now but are games moving to multi core (like using more than 4?)

bling. um thats a "no". only thing i find i useful is my corsair keyboard K68 rbg abilities to assign say, my numpads color based on CPU temperature and the ability to assign colors to game command keys.

i wish it to be fairly quiet so a AIW cpu cooler is pretty much a must. i figure a 360mm radiator with low(ish) noise fans will take care of that.

so as you can see this list is pretty blank. sorry about that, ive been out of the gaming scene since i got married, which of course is a much more fun game. but now its time to play :)

any suggestions or questions feel free to ask, im here to learn.

the worlds your oyster mate with that budget. id wait for zen 3 and go for the 16 core chip i think it called 3800x but thats a guess. you only need one gpu as sli isnt supported in VR yet but your card will be the bizzy and run VR to its max, im using a 1080 and its morethan enough for the oculus rift. goodluck. charl.

yeah ive been hearing good things about zen3.

the budget is simply the max but as it includes the monitor and vr gear i want to make sure it can cover some good stuff.

i dont want to come across as one of those idiots that just blows money and buys the most expensive parts with no regard as to what the build is for, but i want do make sure the parts are all well suited to what i want it to do and it will last a decent amount of time.

like i said i DO NOT want to be disappointed by skimping. i figure if i cant get one of my buds (or my wife) to puke in some VR game i will have considered my system to have failed :)

the oculus. isnt that kinda locked to some game companies? cant remeber. i saw some other brands that seemed to have more support and more options. that vr gear alone was over 1.5 k usd. was stand alone (no cables) and had room sensors so you could make boundaries and move around and such. really gotta do some research on that. all new to me. but ive wanted vr for some time and, well, now is the time.

no the oculus is fully open, i play steam games aswell as the oculus ones, i havnt found a VR game that wont play in 3 years. puking isnt a thing with the rift, it usally comes from poor kit which carnt keep the 90fps pace.

thanks good to know.

kinda disappointing in the puke thing only being if the hardware isnt up to snuff haha

i will be doing some racing and aircraft sims too if there are games that support vr. i figure the aircraft ones would be a good puking candidates.

some guys who suffer from car sickness may get a little feeling sick, but your card is morethan enough to hit the 90fps and keep it there all day long no bother. if your going for Zen its best to get the fastest ddr4 it supports ryzen likes fast ram.

I would buy the Valve Index asap. Well at this point get in line with a reserve. The whole kit is $999 USD and if you buy today you have to wait till August 31st to get it. That will leave you with 4k for your rig and will be plenty. I would wait for the new Ryzen to see if it's better or worse. I would not buy the Oculus Rift S with your budget. It's really a sidegrade from the Rift with its shortcomings.

EDIT: Also, your current rig will do VR just fine after you put one of the 1080 ti's in it. That will hold you over till the new Ryzen chip release. But with your budget, I would probably just get a 9900k and build a system around that cpu.

thanks Mindweaver.

exactly the info i was looking for. the valve index is more or less what i had seen when i briefly looked at vr gear.. room tracking (and the ability to add more base trackers if needed) pity i have to wait till august, preorders have always bugged me but valve is a pretty solid company.

i had considered using my current rig for a stopgap test of vr but a lot of game specs wanted i7s and i9s. so i was worried it would be too much of a choke point. but valve just says 4 cores so my 3750k with a 1080ti should do till i find out if zen3 is good. otherwise at that point ill go with a 9900k.

since the build will do non vr games too ill be looking for a high refest monitor this one is an 8 year old samsung 24 inch. 60hz. period. but it served well in all aother aspects. but as i said, time to build real game rig.

going for a dedicated system as ill set that up in a spare bedroom. playing vr in the living room where this daily driver is will not go over well with my wife lol, but as long as i can say its only temporary ill get off with just a light scolding. she has absolutely zero and i mean zero full stop interest in gaming.

EDIT: oh crap. vr needs win 10 for the graphic drivers that support vr correct? this rig is on win7pro, and really dont wish to switch. bleh. maybe go dual boot, just add another SSD for win10 maybe.

Yea your current rig will be fine after you put one of the 1080 ti's in for VR. Also, my wife cares nothing about gaming as well but enjoys VR games like Beat Saber.

Your P2 is platinum no need to upgrade that. Unless you have a G2 but even in that case no need to upgrade it.

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/vtrsD2

if I had to buy today this is what I would go with.... it's pretty close to what I'm already rocking.

I have the evolv X waiting for Ryzen 3000 to come out and got to say it's an extremely nice case very versatile as well.

You definitely could try your system out as well to make sure if it's adequate or not but quad cores are pretty limiting these days especially if you're trying to get frame rates over 60hz correct me if I'm wrong but with VR you want to maintain a minimum of 90hz that i5 may limit you from doing that.

That being said I would wait a till June to see what Zen 2 brings.

I wouldn't look at a cheap aio loop for a long term build. I would look for a nice big dual tower blower and some good fans.

GPU wise you're going to want to see how it pans out. I'd stick to what you have and then look to upgrade to something new when rtrt is mainstream.

Depends on what CPU he picks... If he goes 9900k only an open loop or 280/360mm aio with decent fans can adequately cool it at 5ghz. My h150i hits around 93C in push/pull at decent ambient temps for example.

That kinda proves my point dude. A twin tower blower beating an aio....

You need a custom loop if you want water, the aio temps creep and super hot chips like the 99k show it up.

I9 is like the new fx8 xD

I wouldn't call 1c after an hour long blender test a victory pretty margin of error. We are also comparing one of the best air coolers to a third tier aio.

I agree though an open loop isn't a terrible idea with this chip. Although in similar stress test my chip with an h150i only hits 92-93c on it's hottest cores still not sure 4-5c is worth an extra $340 as the system used in this stress test was 500ish according to the review.

keep in mind those tests are on an open bench. In a closed case air coolers get absolutely baked by the video card(s) where as an intake AIO will always be cooling with fresh air.

You would need either amazing airflowor a larger case for the aircoolers to come anywhere near the performance you see in open air.

Run that test again in a closed case with quiet fans and the videocard(s) running heaven and you will throttle in a heartbeat.

He already owns the 2x 1080 ti but I guess technically he could sell them for around 550 each depending on what model he has and grab a decent 2080 ti........ If I were him though I would sell one and keep the other.

That being said I would wait a till June to see what Zen 2 brings.

thanks!

printed the list, looks pretty nice.

the case looks good. i plan on at least a 240/280 AIW, or a 360 would be fine too, as long as it fits the case. i dont mind paying a bit extra for stuff that can actually make a difference as long as its not an exorbitant difference. cooling and PSUs are not something to save money on.. although a full custom loop is beyond me at this point. so aiw is my preference. not that im against air coolers but im used to AIW and this H75 has been running 24/7 for 5 or 6 years now. no complaints.

yup i figure that would be one of the 1st upgrades, a 2080ti. hopefully the 1080ti be good enough to hold me a while till the 2080ti price drops a bit.

since vr doesnt do sli i would probably drop the other 1080ti into this rig. always nice to have a second rig that can game decently when a bud shows up.

EDIT: @oxrufiioxo i updated the OP with your list. thanks again!

The case fits a 420mm radiator in front and 280/360mm radiator in top.... I would recommend at least a 280 as the price difference is usually less than 20$

I vote AIO as well. You have to keep in mind the maintenance of a custom loop.
TBH maintenace is a thing regardless of it's an AIO or custom, it's just with an AIO it's not a constant thing but you still need to keep an eye on things.
Custom loops in contrast have a little more on the maintenace side of things but typically perform better based on how you build it.

Either will do.

I also suggest waiting to see what Ryzen 3 will bring if you've decided on a Ryzen build and the release of Ryzen 3 isn't very far off either, less than 2 months in fact (July 7th).
If you want a Ryzen 3 that's the target date of those.
What Intels are available today will be then as well so right now time is on your side to see what's to be before finally pulling the trigger.

As for GPU's the 1080 is fine and will do well but also have to say it's a few years old too, may be OK today but limping along tomorrow. Just look into before building or at the very least keep it in mind for the near future.
I do know if I was to set my recent build up for VR my Rad VII can handle it so I'd be covered there too BUT likewise would have to keep an eye out in the near future for something better.

will probably do a 360 actually, a bit extra cant hurt.

since the valve index wont be out till august anyway i will definitely wait on zen3. might pick up the monitor sooner just to drop into this system in the interim as this poor samsung is showing its age now. works but with my eyesight a crisp new 27" IPS monitor will be nice for a change.

if zen3 isnt better than the 9900k ill go with that.

yeah by august (when the valve index is out) the 1080ti might not be enough for the games at that point. ill pull the trigger on a 2080ti if needed then

thanks again guys you have all been a great help

Cost is another debate, but if you want a system to run problem free for the longer term you want to avoid aio. Good air will give you "about" the same temps for less money and good water will give you better temps and is less likely to give you issues for more money.

That's more the point I was trying to make.

The h115i platinum has a 5 year warranty and hits 92c on a 5ghz 9900k at 1.31v in an hour long Blender test with all turbo limits disabled in a pretty restrictive case as far as airflow (corsair 275R). The only big tower cooler I've seen tested in this same fashion on the Chip hit's 100c (Corsair 570X).

if you have a better cooling option for a 9900k for less money you should recommend it as it would be more constructive to this thread.

The OP is waiting for Zen 2 to make a decision so you have plenty of time.
