Waiting for GTX1070 non-reference or buy a GTX980Ti

But yeah, I still think it will be pretty close to the 980Ti regardless of its specifications... at least at 2560x1440 on down. Beyond that I am sure it will have a memory glass ceiling... and may even have a slight one at 2560x1440... who knows (and how would you compare unless you have a 384 bit 1070, LOL). I still think its going to sit between 5% slower and 980Ti speeds (I have tempered my 'possibly a bit faster statement').

About the performance on 290X.... lets not fool ourselves, because the 290X was underperforming for more than a year after it was released. Especially if you count stock cooled versions of that card. It has little to do with aging, and everything with a difference in driver update regime between AMD and Nvidia. Nvidia brings performance increases at the start of a card release and shortly thereafter, AMD takes it much, much slower if at all. They needed Crimson and a re-release of Hawaii to get it on point. If you look at what is 'under the hood', the AMD cards *should* perform a lot better than they do on release.

Architectural differences. Maxwell had a much stronger Tesselation unit than Kepler, which shows in TW3 when Hairworks is used (and when it's not, because that game is heavy on tesselation regardless). Pretty common knowledge with that game release, also because it swamped AMD's tesselation engine. Hairworks off was the way to bench that game, which is exactly how reviewers had always handled GPU PhysX. So I applaud you for your attempt to underline your view on things, but you're missing the point entirely. Also keep in mind that the 290X started to pull ahead when AMD released the lower quality tesselation settings in the driver. Nvidia never did that for neither Kepler or Maxwell.

Also, all I can see there is the 960 beating 770 with Hairworks off (and on, on the 960), which is exactly as predicted because those two are supposed to go toe to toe. The 780 is not in this bench.

EDIT: it is in the bench further down the review, my apologies. But they're on the exact same perf level instead of 'beating' it... The 770 is only what, 2 fps below that on average. There is obviously something going on in TW3 that tanks framerates, and you can also see that 780ti is escaping that fact entirely - eliminating the idea that 'they crippled performance' pretty much. Why cripple only the 780 and not the 770 or the 780ti?

Yeah, I remember that attention-grabbing claim as well. As a guy who played TW3 now on 4 different GPU's, let me add some ACTUAL experience to the mix. Two of those are the two mentioned in that claim.

At 1080p, with all settings made so that I can see the game how developers intended, the Heavily overclocked beyond SSC settings GTX 960, averaged between 28 and 38 fps.

At the same resolution and settings, the GTX 780 (plain Jane reference blower model) consistently did 42-58fps.

the question you are asking really also depends on the price in your country, at launch, depending on the distribution channels, the 1070 might be more expensive.

If you can get a used 980Ti, that might be the way to go.

Knowing now that the GTX1080 FE costs around 800 Euros in my country and was wondering what the non-reference GTX1070 would cost.
Then I found earlier today a new MSI GTX980Ti at a low (for in my country) 549 Euros, thats why I made this thread.

Since the price of the GTX980Ti went up again later today, I will just wait for the non-reference GTX1070.

Assumptions are the mother of all fuckups. Wait and see. All we have seen today are 1080FE pricing at launch which says absolutely nothing about the AIB 1080's, nor about the 1070's, and even then, this is the launch price for early adopters waiting to jump on the most overpriced GPU in this decade.

Wait. I remember buying the GTX 660 EVGA SC version at launch for 214 eur, then two weeks later it went out for 180, a month later it was 164 eur. Never buy on launch day, it ain't worth it.

Personally I'd go for the 1070 even if the framerate performance is the same since it's newer tech which brings various benefits such as reduced heat and noise, features and will be supported longer and better than the old model.
