want to flash my 5850

hey guys Iam thinking of flashing my hd5850 with that hd5870 msi bios thats aroundIve never flashed a video card bios before and was wondering if someone could give me a few pointers before i do. Also is there maybe a windows based program i can use to flash? prolly not, ,so any help before i try this would be appreciated,this is the bios that iam thinking of useing, please let me know if it is the right one to use

I feel thats a bad idea

but flashing through windows is an even worse idea.

well from reading i was under the impression that i would be able to o/c just like if i flashed with the unlocked 5850 bios, wich means i would get past the 775/1000 or whatever it was , right now I can get past it by modding afterburner from a zero to a one,like alot of peeps do, it was i think extreme o/c i was reading were guys were flashing there 5850 with the 5870 bios and had very good results, Iam not saying iam going to do this for sure, i just wanted to learn a little bit more about the procedure of flashing, and yes i know it would void warranty etc. like i said not a definite but just wanted to learn more about it thanx for the feedback though as all comments are always welcomed Dragon

My friend I wouldnt bother. The results vs. risk are not worth it IMO.

There is no guarantee you will get the Additional Stream processors, and there is no guarantee the additional stream processors will be in Undamaged condition. Good luck is all i can say. You also void warranty by flashing with a Different bios than was intended for the board.

well you r probably right there mailman, what iam thinking to do also is that i have one hd5850 in my puter now and a new one still in the box, so I would like to sell both and buy a hd5870, but like isaid iam just interested in the flashing procedure itself, Ive also heard alot of guys flashing the 5850 unlocked bios to there cards Dragon

I flashed my HIS 5850 with the MSI BIOS. No regrets. Makes overclocking so much easier through CCC/Afterburner. All you need is a thumb drive and 5 minutes. Piece of cake. I think it was well worth it. Before that I was banging my head against the wall trying to get the clock values to stick and boot without having to reset manually every time. Definitely flash out of DOS. There are plenty of tutorials around. You will not get any additional stream processors - they are hard-locked. If you have any problem you can always flash back to your original BIOS.

I flashed my HIS 5850 also, with success. But shaders blocks locked hardware as i know, not from bios, so new bios will up your gpu and memory freqs only. I did this cause i can't get edited in Rbe bios from 5850 with new voltage and freqs to work. And afterburner have only two profiles, and it choose 3D profile when i playing video. And card much hotter with new bios, for instance while gaming in old bios was 67C maximum, with new - up to 80-85C.
So for now i flash my default bios back, cause i have enough gpu power for my current display resolution, may be i will flash it again with 5870 when i will get new 1920x1200 monitor, will see.

Just use the free MSI Afterburner... no flash required.

And if you are going to flash, go with the ASUS 5850 reference BIOS, no point in trying to shove a 5870 BIOS on the wrong card, it won't get you anything. The shaders are hard-wired.

It gives you voltages and freqs from 5870 and right modes switching.
Afterburner don't use right mode for video playing for instance, instead it uses 3D mode.

But for now i think that i will use afterburner with asus 5850 bios and cusom voltage and freqs, for gaming only, other time i will turn it off.

Never had a problem playing videos - are you talking about it simply using more power than needed? As far as I know, the power draw modulates in 4 steps, depending on the load demand.

Yes, it uses mode for 3D, with high freqs, it's not a big problem, just uses more power and become warmer.

hm belitsky.. so you did try the 5870 bios? thats what i was talking about... I know alot other peeps that flashed to a 5870 bios and were very happy, I have not tried anything yet, as iam scared to try lol, with my luck i will screw it up somehow!!! Dragon

Make sure you have a flash card on standby. And by "flash card", I mean a trusty old piece of shit PCI_E VGA card to put in and help you recover from a bad flash ;P

Yep, i used bios from 5870 and back to 5850 bios for now, just cause i no need more power for current resolution. And yes, it worked fine.
I used atiflash to update bios, make backup of original bios, and i never have issues with corrupted bios. I have no second card, only 5850.

hey dragon, sounds like a good/bad idea. The card costs alot and wouldnt flash it and possibly brick it BUT if you have a PCI video card (older voodoo or TNT2) you possibly could recover the card from a bad flash AS LONG AS YOU MAKE A BACK UP COPY OF YOUR CURRENT FIRMWARE.

My advice is if you have the tools to do it and the tools to recover it from a loss or the money to get a new one the do it but if not i wouldnt risk it
