Looking at "2600 MHz FSB" (motherboard vendors write socket AM2+/AM3 motherboards' system interface as "Hypertransport 3.0 5200 MT/s / 2600 MHz"), "128 GX motherboard", I'm guessing it's an AMD quad, running on a Biostar 790GX 128MB motherboard. He must have overclocked it.

private school student Craig Powe has built one of the best computers in Jamaica.

its only got 1 HD4890 a PX4 and 4GB DDR3(It better have DDR3 for that price) with 2 500GB hdd's and they say its one of the best rigs in Jamaica and it costed 2,400US Dollars to build, thats a god damn shame man, for 2,400 dollars it shows you how expensive that stuff must cost in Jamaica if he had to import it to get it cheaper, and if thats one of the best rigs in Jamaica then wow, man, damn, wow.(not in a good way)

I think it shows he has skill, but nothing unseen before, top of the line or not, putting together a pos pc vs something top of the line usually isn't all that different. I was 11 when I put together my dual socket 486 dx/sx setup.

I don't think its that the kid isn't skilled its that the newspaper itself makes jamaica look illiterate in terms of technology in general, I mean seriously when I saw

built one of the best computers in Jamaica.

I was expecting a Core I7@5Ghz with like 16GB of ram and 4 GTX295's and SSD's or something, building a pc isn't remotely hard its the people who haven't ever done it who think its hard, now if he got a dremel and made his own case and painted it then thats something thats nice, but its still not news.

IMO any machine that runs Crysis at max with smooth FPS should be on the news.

When I was 11 I built one of these: http://zx81kit.co.uk/ It required a lot of balls (at the time). Computers were dark and mysterious. Computer parts were expensive. A soldering iron was a dangerous tool. Anything could go wrong...

I didnt think what I had done at the time was impressive. After all, it was a kit... I did NOT design the circuit board or program the MOS myself. Those were ready made components, and hundreds if not thousands of other people were building the same kits quite successfully.

To think that today a 13 year old gets credit for just assembling standard equipment, is a sign of sorry times. How dumb do we think young people are? In other news, child of 13 builds technical lego car kit. :shadedshu

Maybe a lot of young preteen kids do not do that. I mean I know several around me that do, some Ive taught, but it may be impressive there to them. Personally, my niece was helping build computers when she was 6 (super intelligent child, she is 12 now) and her mom asks her before calling me, so yeah I am not impressed with his age. Im impressed he got the stuff though. Im pretty sure a couple other sites may have been cheaper, perhaps a UK company?

ifyou take the article in context it is impressive that a 13 year old jamaican is building this high power PC. but really it isnt that impressive when 13 year olds all across the globe are doing it. 13 year olds with that kind of money are VERY rare, let alone in Jamaica.

Remember, its not the fact that he managed to build a computer. Its not like it said ''everyone was freaking out because he managed to build a PC, which is the biggest thing since TV was invented''

Its the fact that he manged to build such a system in such an area with limited resources to high end parts. That's what makes it a big deal over their, hence it being big news. Its the fact that he actually had the money to get those parts elsewhere and build whats to be considered the best computer in Jamaica.

while im not impressed myself people should read just a tad better when complaining about what he built for the cost.

fact: The parts were ordered on Amazon = not cheapest place to go

fact: parts were imported that means trade tariffs higher shipping expenses

fact: while the us dollar is weakening its still FAR superior as in 1 Jamaican dollar = .011 Us Dollars point of reference an ati x1600 is 28k jamaican dollars so SO cost of his $2400 computer would be 212408.77 jamacian dollars

for another prespective a newspaper costs $25 jamaican dollars or roughly 35 us cents.

average rent in Jamaican (overall average is 40k jamaican dollars granted this a rough fact driven estimate

so that means his computer cost the rough equivalent of 5 months rent in an area of the world not known as an economically prosperous region of the world

so now that we cleared up the cost etc


now again im not impressed with the machine same with most of you but if u factor in the cost of what it takes to build a machine there its actually not half bad as the above ati x1600 was the best card i could find after doing a quick look around at Jamaican retailers.

is the machine impressive to the modern world? - no

is the machine all that powerfull? - no its average

is it probably 1 of the best computers in jamaica? most likely

8800gtx, last time i saw one was like the equivalent of 600+ US out here
500 gb 7200 rpm drive equivalent of 240 dollars
the prices out here are so ridiculous i dont even bother to check
