I was told by both OC.net and TH to not buy the R1 Universal for my CPU, which is worse than all the coolers I listed (not sure about the be quiet! though). Do you have any experience with that Thermaltake case?

Just looked at the case, and holy shit, it supports a ridiculous amount of fans (mobo can't even support all my current fans though). Looks nice too.

OP do you plan to overclock at all? If so skip the cheap boards they will not hold up with the 8350. Get a used crosshair V formula or sabertooth rev 2 if you want to pay less and get a board that will actually overclock comfortably with one of the AMD "8" cores.

My 8320 @ 5Ghz benches as high as a 750$ 5930k Intel CPU. Of course an FX series build can be worth it in 2016, but not at stock speeds.

I like this build other than the motherboard.

It benches in multithreading with a CPU clocked 1.5ghz slower while using 2-3x as much power. A 5820K with an overclock sits even with my PAIR of 4.6ghz 12 core opterons.

Okay, I'd like to make this clear, so I'm going to write it in all caps, bold, and in a large font.

I OWN EVERYTHING ALREADY
I will be overclocking a lot, which is why I want to get a new and bigger cooler. The motherboard, GPU, and the PSU were given to me for free. I can cool the motherboard with stock cooler fans (got the idea from a post about how to reach 5GHz on this motherboard on OC.net). If I could buy one of those kickass motherboards, I would have already.

Let me right this in big bold letters

THAT BOARD SUCKS BALLS FOR OVERCLOCKING AN AMD 8 CORE THE VRM SECTION WILL NOT HANDLE THE WATTAGE THAT CPU CONSUMES AND WILL EITHER FAIL OR JUST SHUT OFF UNDER LOAD.

Read that guide again, it lists all Asus boards the first post is your board and if you scroll through the DIGI+ crap you will notice that they list stability up to 4.7ghz. So I say again that board wont last with an overclocked 8 core chip, but argue all you want I have obviously never overclocked AMD chips before nor do I hold an world records for them. Oh wait.

try that one....
$400 for the PSU, Cooler and case?
you have Cordair HX 750w thats pretty fine unit,
also hafX its pretty decent unit,
with $400 ill go for custom watercolling for your rig...

A H100i and motherboard worth its weight would get his system clocked substantially higher than a custom loop.

990Fx board could also be a great update but OP affirms that the board could handle great OC's so board advises wont be effective on this discussion i guess... but better cooling is gona be great advise, AIO's are great, maintenance free and pretty much options.

Regards,

The OP can say what he wants it doesn't make it any less wrong...under load that tiny VRM section is only rated to 175W which means it would throttle with a 9590 at stock speeds let alone an overclocked 8350 which will draw more wattage.

Fixed it.

I was told not to by /r/watercooling, but okay.
why not?
watercooling is a great option for higer clocks...
chilled processors could easily reach great clocks and stability, also is better for all electronics to keep chilled temps, im not saying that your cooler sucks but water is better in temps, performance and sh*t ...

I prefer not having another jet-sounding cooler inside my computer, so I won't buy any AIOs for as long as I live. I guess I can sell a few things (I'll list my spare parts below, and you can tell me what I could sell) to afford a new motherboard.

  • ASUS M5A97 R2.0 (have the box, but it's an M5A97 LE R2.0)
  • CRYORIG H7 (have the box)
  • ASRock 970 Performance (still have the box)
  • Crucial 16gb (4x4gb) DDR3-1333 (dead, but I can RMA it)
  • MSI A88XI AC (my friend would kill me if I sold this, his Athlon, or his Antec PSU)
  • Antec HCG-620M
  • AMD Athlon X4 760k (still need to fix the pins)

why not?

They said upgrade your system before, because once you do the loop, it's pretty much your final build.

You can find used 990FX boards cheap...look for a crosshair V or sabertooth. Sell the other random boards. done.

Ayy... Oy...

Listen to cdawall.

1. That guide, doesn't appear to be for that specific board... its generic.
2. That board will NOT like overclocking an octo core very much. You will more than likely see throttling due to VRMs and the socket getting hot.
3. With that in mind, if you still want to try overclocking heavily on that board, I suggest ACTIVE cooling on the VRM and a fan blowing on the back of the motherboard.
4. Get a proper mobo for the job is the best advice...

If I could reach 4.6GHz on a cooler that shouldn't even be working at that clock speed and on a shittier mobo with less cooling, I think this ASUS should be fine. I can also flip my Cougar around so it's blowing onto the motherboard.

Whatever you say...

...just keep an eye out for thermal throttling due to the VRMs or the socket getting too hot.

Good luck.

I like to open my computer to feel the parts that can generate heat (like my CPU, GPU, motherboard, and occasionally the PSU)

Not sure the relevance of that statement....

In fact, I picture the 'voice' behind that sentence as Ralph Wiggum from The Simpsons...
I do too, lol. I watch it too much.

Whatever you say...

...just keep an eye out for thermal throttling due to the VRMs or the socket getting too hot.

Good luck.

It's going to shut off.

Amd supplies and recommends liquid cooling for fx-9590. There is some really sound reasoning behind that. Same or more fx 8350 @ 5ghz.

OP is going to do this only his way, and will get an expensive lesson("lesson" if he learns) from it.
That 970 le is a joke. Vrms get hot as hell with a stock 8350.

I doubt he will take any advice from you guys.
