Warranty on a piece of a bigger warranty?

Ok, so laptop's hdd drive died 1.5 weeks past the warranty.. however i figured that seagate usually offers a longer warranty than my 3 month longer warranty. Can i pull out the drive and get seagate to warranty it with my laptop's receipt as proof of purchase?

..or will this completely and utterly fail?

Give it a shot . I men what do you have to loose ? Go to the web site and ask for an RMA !

Seagate will allow you to enter the model and serial number to see if there is any other warranty past the OEM. Usually a drive from such a machine will not be allowed an RMA directly from Seagate.

and i can't get asus to submit the warranty on my behalf right? cause my warranty with them is no longer there =/

if the laptop warranty is up you are pretty screwed. As stated, you can apply and raise a stink and see if you can get any love for it being almost right on the date the warranty was up.

I foresee it as utter fail. Why? When you purchased the laptop you also purchased the warranty on it as a whole, not individual parts. Do you happen to have a copy of your warranty?

I'd take it up with Asus being as polite and reasonable as possible in hopes of a good faith repair.

Technically the drive was sold with an OEM warranty, which is most likely only 1 year. The warranty is between the drive manufacturer and the notebook company, not the drive manufacturer and you.

okay, well just a couple of points - my laptop is a refurb(or something along the lines), so it only came with a 3 month warranty.. hard fails 3 months and about 2 weeks into the usage.. currently don't want to fuck with my laptop and it running off ubuntu on my 8gb usb external "hard drive", since now i have to deal with motherboard failures on my desktop -_-

will keep you guys updated if anything else happens..
