Watercooling advice needed...

Hey all,

I wanted to ask if there is any formula to determine the cooling efficiency of a watercooling setup. I'm asking because I' thinking of making the jump to water, but only if I'm gaining a marked increase in cooling over my Tuniq Tower 120 and my HR-03.

I'm trying to run my e6600 @ 3.8 to 4 GHz and my 1950XT at 750/1000 or higher.

I was thinking of a Danger Den TDX CPU block and a Danger Den Tyee for my 1950XT (I may, because of a package deal, add a block on the chipset.) This would run with a Liang 12V variable pumpthrough a Black Ice Xtreme II with a couple of 56CFM fans pushing through it.

If anyone has some advice/suggestions/experiences with this equipment, please let me know.

Well it may not improve your cpu temps by a whole lot, but it will shave 3-7 c off your load temps. With water on your x1950 your temps should never go above 50c period. Liang pump and dual 120mm rad rounds it out rather well. All of that in 1/2 ID tubing and you should be pretty well off.

Mount that on top of your case with the fans blowing down onto the rad and you should get some stellar performance.

as far as cooling effectiveness, you will want to look to the water block. That will make the biggest difference, next to the radiator.

I would recommend the Apogee series by swiftech.

Well, that's good to know! One question though, I am still strugling with the layout in my Ultra Aluminus tower. You suggest mounting the rad on top and having the fans blow down, do you mean venting the warmed air into the case? I had an idea to mount it on the floor of my case and have it either pull the cool outside air through it or push and warmed air out the bottom.
Any votes for push or pull configurations?

i have my 3ple rad on top-outside the case.
in the beggining i had it with pull fans..now i have it with push and it performs a little better..

Mount it to push hot air out of the system.

And i personally dont like the 1/2 tubing.

It really looks like same snakes are trying to eat your pc.

I would go with some 1/4 tubing.

1/4 has more pressure it seems and less flow. Bigger tubing usually tends to lend to more flow and less restrictions.

Yes, I had looked at the Apogee GT but was wondering if that design hindered the flow?
Now that I type that, I'm quite sure that it is, in fact, a stupid statement.

I am talking physically outside and on top of your case. All you need to do is drill the mounting holes on top of the case and then affix the radiator on top of stilts (not directly on top of the metal) to allow good airflow. This way your rad always gets cool air (from out side of the case) and you don't heat up the air inside your case (completly external mount). Look through the case mod gallery and you should see plenty of top mounted radiators.

Liang pump, apogee gt (I have that block in my rig), blackice rad, a dangerden or swiftech gpu block, all in 1/2inch tubing would perform great. Liang pumps have great pressure and flow so using 1/4 would kill performance.

You dont kill performance with less tubing....

Man the only thing you need is a flow over 20l/h. Everything over it is just rubbish u dont need it.

Iam running my C2D on a system which have 8mm outside and 6mm inside.

Its running all cool and no 1/2 tubing system is cooler or really better than this system.

I would like to see that article redone with a jet impingement block such as the swiftech storm. Thats where larger tubing allows better performance. With a low resistance setup like the one you are planning greif is right in saying it wont make a huge amount of difference. However I would still go with 1/2.

Kenny give yourself a short question:

You have a system with high flow, 1/2 tubing and a cpu cooler that can use the high flow.

But after all the water flows at ever point in the system with the same speed.
So in this system the radiator has the same short amount of time to get the heat out of the water.

I mean the only advantage of big tubing is that the water flows more rounds in your system....

Water it self is the factor there. It can grab a hole lot of heat but it needs the same amount of time to get the heat away.

Here: The system is from a friend of mine i guess he has the same temperatures than u will have with a swiftech block and a 1/2 tubing. he uses a Eheim 1046 and this pump brings enough power and the system itself is inaudible.
