Rather amusing that they are letting people stick to the older chipset on this one and there is no noise about "increased power consumption" due to the 2 extra cores. I'll also mention that the VRMs on Z370 boards are for the most part worse than on Z170/Z270 boards...

Better prepare the forums for lots of blown out VRMs when people stick their shiny new 8core chips in hopelessly inadequate Z370 boards

Looks like they're desperate to compete with AMD. We now need to see a shift like this in graphics, but I can't see it happening anytime soon.

Oh boy...I see you two have some dislike of Intel...Well I for hope they do make the 8 core compatiable with the Z370 as it would make for a nice upgrade path. I dont have any feelings for a company becouse at the end of the day its my hard earned money that is going to be spent..It just comes down to what is best for me and my use case be it AMD or Intel...

And on the 'looks like they are desperate to compete with AMD'...Well if Q1 revenue for Intel was $16 Billion and for AMD $1.6 Billion , I think AMD has a long, long, long, long, long, long, long, long, long, long way to go to catchup, let alone beat Intel..Though as a consumer, I certainly hope they do compete...Just some perspective.

I just want an el cheapo 8 core from Intel to give me a reason to upgrade. Maybe this will be the intro to that.

I just find it amusing that we're basically going to have a small repeat of when the AMD released the FX line and people started throwing them in inadequate boards and even start overclocking them.

Might not see the same number of melted mosfets but I wouldn't be surprised to see countless "why doesn't my 8 core turbo?" and VRM throttling threads...

The only thing about the fx processors was the performance - high clocks but awful performance, my x5650 smashes the fx 9590 massively alongside my 6600k too.

They were hit and miss... Competitive with sandy bridge but CMT was inherently flawed so they fell out of relevance pretty fast after the pipeline upgrades on HSW and then by SKL they were completely uncompetitive.

Better prepare the forums for lots of blown out VRMs when people stick their shiny new 8core chips in hopelessly inadequate Z370 boards

Not really amusing, just plain and simple facts:
- Z370 pinout is different and Z170/270 doesn't support the full Coffee Lake pin setup (notably the ones to power the extra cores)
- VRM is just fine for 95W-150W power budgets which is what a 6 core but also an 8 core part will be landing in with an OC. Of course, the low end won't suffice. But most mid range boards do it just fine.
- Intel TIM is going to hold you back long before you hit VRM limits
- Intel's TDP budget for the 8 cores will not be much higher than the 6 core parts, ie lower all core turbo's are likely

But I know, its popular to echo what you hear elsewhere.

The FX procs also burned boards but not all boards, only the low end / lesser chipset models with shitty VRM combined with an 8 core FX. The 6 cores were doing fine even on those lower boards. Its still fun indeed to see the pattern here and it now happening for Intel, but don't exaggerate... you seem to do that a lot.

Intel really didn't start thinking about this two days ago, its very likely they already had a backup plan similar to this laid out for Z370 and they had several routes. Z390 was NEVER going to be an upgrade 'capable for 8 cores' all it does is add integrated wifi. Most of what's been said or rumored is just that: rumors.

Well if you are that naive not to watercool it:p i will stick a shiny new 8 cores CPU and i promise you that no VRM will blown out:p

Looks like they're desperate to compete with AMD.

I get your point...I would think that might be an issue on the low to mid range boards, but the high end like the Asus Hero range and above, Gigabyte Gaming 7, MSI 7 and above and not forgetting ASRock with there mighty VRM's from the mid-range all the way to there top end should be able to handle it especially as power delivery is pretty much more than currently required... And if you are going to spend $400 + on a i9 8 Core then you should have a good motherboard to go with it.

But it might all be moot as it is more likely that Intel will force us onto Z390 which would be pretty bad...I can only hope that with AMD doing a stellar job at the moment with Ryzen and Threadripper, Intel changes tack and does something different by allowing the Z370 platform to take the new 8 core....I'm not holding my breath but one can live in hope!

Why would you want to be forced to use z390? Having the option I can understand, but being forced to use it? If you want to upgrade to z390 be my guest, but many of those of us who have z370 already and also would like one of the new chips may not be interested in the new board.

Hi Gungar, I can't speak to the Maximus X but I can speak to the gigabyte Z370 Gaming 7 which I have been using since launch. It has been rock solid and stable allowing overclocks on my 8700K non delidded to 5GHz...I did not go any further but it was stable and XMP to my 3000MHz RAM worked fine first time. Overall the BIOS is fairly easy to work with though getting adaptive/off set is a bit of a chore but again works fine. The Gaming 7 has been very easy to work with though I do not use there APP software which I find a bit crud.

Oh? what's wrong with the maximus X? i wasn't sure which one to pick between this one and the gigabyte gaming 7, you advice against the asus one?

There's nothing wrong with the maximus X but it's not the kind of Motherboard i am used to buy.

It would be a good excuse to update that piece of junk i own considering that Asus ROG Motherboards Z370 are the worst i have used/own.
Eh, Z370 gen as a whole sucks ass, no wonder Z390 and 8core+ CPUs come out so fast.

I cant say it's a bad Motherboard so far has done the job and not issues since i bought it but i have always bought Asus Rog Extreme Editions but because Asus didn't release any Z370 Rog Extreme Edition let's say i was forced to buy the Maximus X.
