Weird Computer Crashes

My new laptop is in my specs in the left. I have had a few problems with it, mainly the strange crashes with it. Here is how it goes:

What kind of crash? Randomly, the computer's screen will shut off, and the computer will continue to function for 2 seconds (songs continue to play etc.), and then shut off.

I can play Fallout 3 with no crashes so I have ruled out overheat. I have run memtest, so I have ruled out bad memory. I have run Speedfan for HD errors, and ruled that out. My main problem I would guess is Vista, but I am not so sure. I am torn between it being a hardware or software problem, but am leaning towards software. The laptop is an Asus N81vg.

The most crashes I have had are when I start up Wolfenstein, the computer will crash before getting into the loading screen. I have had it crash a few times when I have run MediaMonkey, playing music, so I am quite puzzled. Throw some ideas out there!

Turn it on and let it sit there and see if it crashes without you on it.

I am running SP2, but I had the same problems with SP1. It also crashes sometimes right after I login. And no, I did not OC it.

Perhaps some power management feature is shutting it down? Check through your options for power management in Windows and in your bios.

Yeah I checked that too, Asus had this weird power management stuff on it, I removed it.

I decided to update the drivers for my video processor in this laptop. I am running Media Monkey which crashed the damn thing in the first place. We will see. What concerns me is I can play as much Wolfenstein or Fallout 3 as I want (minus that Wolf CD weirdness) without event, yet something simple like Media Monkey will crash it. Strange if you ask me (I blame Vista). I also updated my bios on the laptop to the newest ones lately, but in the fix there was nothing saying that it had added anything except updates for Windows 7 compatibility.

Ok clearly nothing above did the trick, I just had it crash.

Here was the setup:

Media Monkey open, playing music
Firefox open, browsing

I then open the pictures folder, click the picture, the screen goes black, and the machine shuts off.

That means to me it is a software problem (I blame Vista), but I am confused as to what would cause that.

Have you checked the system event logs to see if any errors are reported after a crash

Yes I have run through the event logs, and seen it failed to boot some symantec processes. I promptly used the symantec uninstaller tool so that is out. I get this weird error with language pack but I don't think that is the issue.

Maybe run chkdsk? Maybe something in the hard drive is boogered up.

check your services, maybe a service needs to go to manual instead of auto, or maybe something doesn't need run at all

Ok when I ran a vanilla chkdsk, this is what came up... Diagnosis?

You hit the nail on the head! I ran a chkdsk /r and rebooted. It fixed that problem. Who knows if that is the cause of the crash, I will report back soon.

Well it does make sense. Not having the computer crash on the most extreme programs means there is a problem is some part of the HD, so that means maybe sector x and y were corrupted and only certain programs would trigger it.
