Weird external HD issue, crashing explorer.

I got a WD2000 IDE plugged into an external enclosure with all of my back up data on it. When i plug it in windows dose find it, but when i go to "My Computer" it causes the explorer to crash and not be recovered untill i power down the drive. I have tried going into disk management to see if it was showing up there but it would not load any info. I'm sure it is failing, but is there anything i can do to get into the drive?

take the drive out of the enclosure and hook it up directly and see if it works that way.

Doesn't Show up in bios, Never even gets past the screen where it shows all of your drives.

Are all the pins level on the IDE HDD connector, as i've had one whats been pushed in (away from the IDE cable connectors reach) also i know it sounds silly but check for loose wires on the 4 pin molex cable (for the power).

check to make sure its not on cable select, make sure that its set appropreately [is it PATA or SATA?]

He did state it was IDE, But good point about the jumper being on the correct setting.

PATA, Have tried both master and slave jumper configurations, the hard drive dose spin up.
