As demand for higher capacity storage continues to increase due to large video applications, including high-definition video, WD today expanded its WD AV-GP line of hard drives to include a 2 TB capacity, the industry's largest available drive to-date. WD AV-GP hard drives with WD GreenPower Technology provide cooler and quieter operation and lower power consumption.
Designed to withstand the stringent environment of the surveillance and security markets, the WD AV-GP line of hard drives for audio and video applications reduces power consumption by as much as 40 percent over standard drives in their respective classes. The new WD AV-GP 2 TB hard drive is perfect for applications such as DVRs (digital video recorders), media centers, media servers, as well as surveillance video recording that demand a higher capacity hard drive and exceptional reliability.

"Our consumer electronics customers require hard drives that consume less power, generate less heat, and operate quietly," said Jim Welsh, senior vice president and general manager of WD's branded products and consumer electronics groups. "Audio and video recording applications, such as DVRs, media servers, media centers, and mainstream surveillance systems, often demand 24x7 operation from hard drives. Our drives meet the demanding requirements of these markets including higher reliability, universal compatibility, low power consumption and the ability to simultaneously record multiple audio and/or high-definition video streams."

AV Intelligent Drive Technology
Following are several features of the WD AV-GP line of hard drives:
  • Long-term Reliability - Designed to last in high-temperature always-on streaming digital audio/video environments such as PVR/DVR recorders and surveillance video recorders.
  • Quiet - Noise levels have been minimized to less than one sone1 - virtually below the threshold of human hearing.
  • Reduced Power Consumption - With the combination of WD's IntelliSeek, IntelliPark, and IntelliPower technologies, WD has reduced power consumption by up to 40 percent compared to competitors' drives.
  • IntelliPark - Delivers lower power consumption by automatically unloading the heads during idle to reduce aerodynamic drag. IntelliPark improves non-operating shock characteristics, providing enhanced robustness in environments where excessive transportation and handling occurs.
  • Compatible - Tested for compatibility in a broad range of AV products including set-top boxes, DVD recorders, and mainstream surveillance systems.
  • SilkStream - Optimized for smooth, continuous digital video playback of up to 12 simultaneous HD streams. SilkStream is compatible with the ATA streaming command set so CE customers can use standard streaming management and error recovery options.
  • Preemptive Wear Leveling (PWL) - The drive arm frequently sweeps across the disk to reduce uneven wear on the drive surface common to audio video streaming applications.

Availability and Pricing
The WD AV-GP 2 TB hard drive (model WD20EVDS) is available from select e-tailers and distributors. MSRP is $299.00 (USD). More information about WD AV-GP drives may be found on the company's Web site at http://www.wdc.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=615.

I'm not bothered with 1.5TB or 2TB drives, unless Samsung made an F1 model :D

at least samsungs F2's rotate (geddit?) between 5,400 and 7,200 RPM, i got nothing against the drives idling in the slower state to save noise and power.

What i dont like is how WD are hiding it.

They don't advertise the GP's RPM as being 5400 because people will then immediately assume the drive gives poor performance. Which if anyone ever bothers to read any benchmarks, it shows that that isn't the case. The Green series make fantastic data storage drives.

Also, Samsung's drives do not spin slower or faster. Hard drive platter rotation cannot alter on the fly, it spins at ONE speed and is calibrated for ONE speed. This can be proven by monitoring the frequency that the hard drive is emitting to determine exact platter rotation speed.

it sure does make for great storage drives , however its not what "the ppl" want lol. I know i only want the black ones. like Mussels said its the same thing they did with the Green drive the ones thats out now sure there afraid ppl wont buy it and we wont. Especialy with every 3rd or so person putting it in the Cons or the other informations section of newegg. Id take 2 raptor 1Gs or one 2tb black or WD ssds (which we know when they come out they will lead the price war or at least "start it" )But hey lol none of them exist so what do WD lovers like myself do? EVEYTHING ANYONE ELSE does at that site 2x1tbs and call it a night. when i saw GP i knew it was still green and something tells me "black" is a while off. There 1tb is still the best buy from that whole company and its KILLING the comp.

Plenty of people are buying the Green drives based on their performance and not marketing. Over at OCForums, I've seen a lot of RAID5 arrays based on them. There's situations where the Blacks are better, and situations where the Greens are better, just depends on what you're doing with the drives. For storage/RAID arrays, Green's are quieter, use less power, and run cooler while being cheaper than the Black. No brainer on an awesome RAID5 build.

But a 7200rpm 2TB drive would perform better. Screw noise, power consumption or heat production, I want speed.

yeah its rated for 5400 rpm, being that its green. WD doesnt mention it but they are not really hiding it either. I own the 1.0TB WD Caviar Green and this puppy is awesome even in HD Tach.

... which is why I say that the Black and Green both have different purposes. If you're building a RAID5, then you tend to care about noise, power consumption, and heat production. If you just want a speedy desktop hard drive, you go Black. :)

I wouldn't buy the 2TB 'Green' HDD's. Yes, they're for storage, but storage of 1080p movies requires performance. A 5,400 RPM 2TB drive is nothing compared to two 7,200 RPM 1TB drives in RAID 0. Although, the reason I haven't even considered it is, of course, the price.

Nah, the Green drive is orders of a magnitude faster than the throughput needed for 1080p video. Even the Green series can read multiple 1080p movies simultaneously.

Yes, perhaps, but how long does it take to transfer such a movie?
Although, if the price was much lower, I'd still consider buying one. I just wish they'd get on with some REAL 2TB drives. I just bought an extra 3 1TB drives because there is simply nothing better at higher capacities.

Yes, perhaps, but how long does it take to transfer such a movie?
Although, if the price was much lower, I'd still consider buying one. I just wish they'd get on with some REAL 2TB drives. I just bought an extra 3 1TB drives because there is simply nothing better at higher capacities.

i agree that one tb drive is so awsome the price point vs quality is unbeatble thats why i cant wait for them to join SSD club i know things will change when the big guns come to down. right now the 2tb is there hot $hi+ so they will leave it way up high and target ppl who cant resist lime candy(green) (server owners ect) when the black drops itll be the price the green is now for a WHILE and the green will drop to where it shoulda always been lol. But your right that one tb im on 2 of them now and guess what my next comp will have lol 2 of them.

Yeah, I still think the 1TB F1's are the best buy on the market right now in terms of value for both capacity and performance.
