Essentially the manufacture is the 1st party and then if anyone develops something based on the original design/chip/board then they are considered 3rd party.

Example:

I buy a new mp3 player. It runs fine with it's bundled software, but I want to run my own organizational software to load the mp3 player. Using my own software is considered 3rd party software.

Or better yet, 3rd party is unaffiliated with the manufacture.

1st party is the original manufacturer(eg Nvidia), 2nd party are the guys who does some improvements but still working/blueprint according to the original manufactures(eg EVGA, BFG), 3rd party are the guys who do "parts/modifications" without much consent from the original manufactures(eg Arctic Cooling, Zalman, Termalteke)
