What are these mounting holes on this case? Are they HDD mounts?

They have screw holes on underside too. I know this after putting HDDs into Define R4.

It would be easier to determine the intention of these holes if we knew who manufactured the case and its model number. Alas, OP decided not to provide this information.

Concerning drive screw holes, 3.5" HDDs, 2.5" HDDs and 2.5" SATA SSDs all have mounting screw holes on the sides as well as the bottom.

My personal guess is that this area is intended to be used for a custom cooling loop, perhaps a distribution plate but not a radiator since it is not perforated for fans.

Reminds me of an old case i had with hdd cages that hooked into the back panel with a wide horizontal slot on the bottom to hold it in place and a screw hole under that to lock it in. I think it was a chen ming server chassis? I forget.

Makes no sense. Open this area up and punch a lot of holes in the case if this section is intended for ventilation.

All you would need would be some mount holes for 120mm and maybe 140mm fans.

The various Lian Li 011 Dynamic cases are configured this way.

Lamentably, OP is AWOL and never posted what manufacturer/model number of this case.

Those are mounting holes for EATX form factor Motherboards...See that the holes are in line with ATX motherboard mounting holes....

That makes zero sense.

With *YOUR* illustrative photograph, the ATX and E-ATX motherboards have the same mounting screw locations. The E-ATX board's PCB simply extends another 3-4 cm beyond the right-most ATX mounting screws. It's an EXTENDED ATX mobo.

Note that the area in question (highlighted in the OP's original photo) has slotted screw holes for variable placement location, a feature not used for motherboard standoffs.

Clearly the zone indicated is for a device that needs to have some flexibility in its vertical attitude but not horizontal.

EATX IS an extended form factor of ATX with 3 additional screw mounting holes.....

Motherboard Formats as given in wikipedia
EATX can be found under variants of ATX form factor....

That makes zero sense.

That 3-4 cm extension has 3 screw mounting holes...not clear in the first picture though..:) I think the extra mounting holes are optional...some motherboard manufacturers may not use it.....

knowing the case in question would help, but I agree with @Jose Jeswin. Those three screw holes look like “EATX” to me.

I could imagine a situation where the three lateral mounts are for drive sleds, but I don’t think I’ve seen any case implement in this way. They’d have to be slotted in with a 90* hinge, left just kind of hanging there. I’d imagine you’d want a built-in thumbscrew for that sort of design, but there are no screw holes. Them being railed drive sleds makes less sense since there are only three slots — you could only mount one drive in that case and, still, no screw holes (you’d need 8 screw holes to handle four drives). Probably just a generic OEM motherboard mount used for dozens of designs (I’m thinking thermaltake or some other cheap case).

I really love the “no you’re wrong” posts that neither address the argument or warrant their claim on TPU. Super thoughtful and well reasoned

Have you seen a cable-tie point on a chassis in the past 20 years? Does this look like any of them? Could you fit a zip-tie or a cable wrap in a screw hole?

If your talking about the two lines of multiple holes my best guess is they are for a water cooling distribution plate, but as others have stated without knowing the case model they could indeed be for anything

I had a case which was almost identical to that (Can't remember the make/model), but I think it was a bit of future proofing as it allowed you to mount whatever you wanted in that area = the manual didn't specify anything in particular.

It doesn't help that he has three different types of holes circled. There are standoff holes, vertical slots and horizontal slots.

OP, which are you referring to?
