What are your future GPU plans?

With NVIDIA's new cards out, having shocked the market successfully, a lot of users feel the urge to upgrade or switch teams.

What are you going to do?

I need more information on the GTX 980. Right now it looks like I might buy a STRIX 980 with the RMA money for my R9 290 because the STRIX card has GPU Hotwire support which makes it the only GTX 980 with unlocked voltage control. After I'm done benching it I'll probably use it for mining+physx(I don't like Nvidia's software either) since an overclocked GTX 980 is capable of pushing out almost 2x the hashrate of my R9 290X while pulling much less power. So I can have the card mine 24/7 and when I play a game with PhysX it'll do that too.

EDIT: I'm also waiting on the new AMD GPU announcement

I put in that I'm happy with my geforce but if I manage to sell it I'm going for the 970 but I'm not in a rush though

I think NVidia are on to a winner. Their 970's are selling like gold dust, and offer the kind of performance everyone needs and wants.

When the dust is settled I'll buy what's best when the prices have been cut once or twice.

Gotta love the predictable GPU marketplace. GTX 770 will do me nicely 'till then (1080p) and currently there is no single card that really allows a comfortable 4K setup. I'm kinda done trading apples for apples year after year, either it's a big step up or I'll stay where I am

This said, I'm not willing to give up on the 7970 yet. It's substantially whipped by the 970, but I'm not yet seeing the ends of my current card. Whenever the 970 hits somewhere near the $250 price point I'll be jumping on the boat.

I think that'll be a really long wait :-/

I don't disagree. The thing is, I snagged an ASUS Direct copper II 7970 for less than $200. I managed doing so right before the mining boom, and I've been immensely happy with having that level of performance.

The 970 is better, but incrementally so. I'd be willing to jump to Nvidea at the 970 level if the incremental price of an upgrade is reasonable for me, which is around the $250 price range. If launch prices are $330, and AMD gets off their laurels, the 970 could be at the $270 mark after a couple of price drops. Wait for a sale, and that $250 mark isn't too unreasonable.

This said, it'll likely be 7-9 months before we hit that point. By that point the power consumption of the 7970 and diminished relative performance should be reason enough to upgrade.

having a R9 290 is more a sidegrade in the case of a single 970 (specially when you pay half the price of a 970 for it ...) i would say it's more about watts than perf ... IE: for a 290cfx i would need a 2nd 290 and a new PSU for a 970 SLI or a single 980 the PSU could wait a bit

Not really a sidegrade since it's improving your fps in almost every game out there, it's an upgrade even for my 780 just not a major upgrade.

@the end of the year i will pickup a gtx970 and a fiend of mine 2, probally msi of gigabyte, i love gtx970 it's stupid fast with low power consumption and it will only get faster with better drivers

will not wait the Ti (Lube edition "you got raped"? ) the 980 is already qualified for that 23% faster than a 290 (well 23-25% so) but as i said : im not about perf for now, i am interested in watts and what nV will offer for now and if AMD come up with something good i will switch again... i don't care what i have in my PC even if its only for 2-3 month ahah

970 of course, but if/when the prices come down to a realistic level here in hell. Only the Zotac (non-Amp) non-ref is even closer to the touted nvdia prices. Asus is so greedy

Still happy with my 7970. Not showing any weaknesses yet. AMD thought the same, renaming it 280X so until they release something "new" I am sticking with what I got.

same as Instg8r, I have a HD7970 that does that job and would love a GTX980 but the cost is the only factor. Cost per frame isn't there but the cool factor would be great! lol

really, im in the same boat as most ppl; my current card GTX 680 does just fine with my games and is def an improvement over the old card, HD 7870. Price is the only thing stopping me from getting one

My answer is "waiting for faster NVIDIA (but more expensive)," although I'm not waiting because the current cards don't offer a performance increase. I want to get rid of these 7970s as some point, but since I can't afford the cost of upgrading this generation I probably will end up buying the NVIDIA card(s) that replaces the GTX 980.

My next card definitely won't be AMD because of the way the company resolved (or more correctly did not resolve) the frame pacing issues with multiple 7970s and >3K resolutions. AMD's story throughout 2013 was "we'll have a fix in September," which of course got delayed five months. Then in February 2014, after nearly a year of waiting, the story became "here's a fix for a few games; buy 290s if you want frame pacing to work in all games." If the company had just admitted that the problem was un-fixable in early 2013 I would have been frustrated but less so than I am now because I would have sold the cards when they were still top of the line and could fetch $400 each.
