Im considering building a new system based on the new i7 chips but my only sticking point is what card configuration would give me the best performance for the dollar and possible upgrade path. the HD4850s i already have are great performers but i feel like the i7 would be bottle necked by them(plus i wouldn't be able to a third if i wanted on a P6T). the other option is getting a HD4870 and adding a second later down the road.

i would suggest getting a 4870X2 which performs better than two 4870's in xfire and requires less power, and later on you could go quadfire, now that would be one hell of a setup with your i7...

i agree with murder death kills statement, sli/crossfire seems to scale very well with better processors.

I would do that but my initial budget doesn't allow me to purchase the HD4870x2.
And i wanted to do the entire system on a TX750 in a Lian Li lan cool mid tower, i have some solid power and size restraints for this build.

Why not crossfire 4850s, 4870s, or GTX260s?

You'll have no bottlenecks with any graphics card on the market as the i7 can handle them all with ease given you have the right memory/clocks to back up the GFX.

im more than sure the i7 wont bottle neck them but will they bottle neck the i7 is my question. will a set of xfired 4850s be able to efficiently use the power of an i7 more so than say an HD4870 xfire of a pair of GTX260s?

No. You can't bottleneck a processor with 4850s (they're very powerful cards), but the xfired/SLI higher end cards will perform at 100% more easily on an i7 than on most other platforms.
