What CPU Next (personal machine)?

Now that the crypto-plague is waning and DRAM cool-off, I'm eyeing an upgrade from my i7-4770K + Z97 + 16GB 1866 MHz build.

I'll buy within 14 days whatever gets the most votes. Anonymous vote.

Hard to tell without knowing what it's used for. It it's mostly gaming, 9700k (I would say 9600k, but who knows how long you'll have the system and if 8 core will hold a significant advantage over 6 core in the future)... If there's gonna be lots of thread-heavy work and time spent waiting on the processor is a serious factor, go for Ryzen.

I use it for 4K AAA gaming as well as TPU work, which can involve a lot of image editing on PS and multiple browser tabs. There's no video editing. The machine stays on 18 hours/day.

Meh, I'd probably just stay with what you got then, unless you have too much money and are bored. Benchmarks seem to show almost any CPU can do 4k gaming, because the bottleneck is very much placed on the GPU at that resolution. I wouldn't expect image editing to require a very beefy CPU, but if you're CPU limited there and you can use >8 threads, then go with Ryzen, if it would matter. If not, why not invest in something fun, like a custom water setup?

This 4770K feels slow, especially after meltdown/spectre patches. There's visible lag in Photoshop as I'm cropping big TIFFs, resizing, or saving-for-web.

I've found my 8700k quite fine at 5ghz btw... maybe go with that? (voted 8086k since closest)

Well it cost me money nothing for me is free so yeh I am happy and I don't need another setup for some yrs to come that's also why I still got my GTX 1080 Ti.

My i7-8086k runs 5ghz all the way around thanks to multi-core enhancement.

I know a certain local retailer who hasn't overpriced their 8086K yet (their 8700K is pricier). Plus, it's a decent chip.

I'd say that head to head 9700K or 8086K would be a hard decision to make.

4K gaming well you can run any CPU really its not going to show much of a difference in FPS, its all GPU bound at that Res. Question is do you care how much you spend?

Adobe loves Clock speed so one of the Intel CPU's would be a better choice then the AMD.

Z370/390 is a dead socket, what you see is what you get and no more where the AMD you will at least have choices in years to come.

If I ask W1zzard very nicely to give me a CPU, I'll get the i7-4790K currently powering his personal rig. Not really an upgrade from my 4770K. Every other CPU is needed for future CPU review rebenches.

I was in a similar boat a while ago when building a gaming rig for family. Get the 8700k/8086k. Plenty of cores and really good GHz. Zen2 may be better but for your usage scenario i would recommend 8700k/8086k

My vote goes with the Ryzen

I think price/performance of the CPU is brilliant. I'd just pair it up with a decent motherboard and a minimum of 16Gb ram and I'd say you'd be golden
