I'm bored and even though I have hundreds of games in my collection that I haven't played or finished, I found myself looking through the Steam store. This particular moment I found myself reading reviews for Project Zomboid and right near the top of the reviews was this:

Project Zomboid.jpg

I instantly had a case of deja vu and I started looking at games I knew I looked at the day before. Sure enough, I stumbled on to this review of Monster Hunter World:

I sat here wondering if these people were using this format for all the points when I decided to move on and continue browsing games. I then clicked on a game I have thought about playing off and on for a long time now, RAFT and clicked on the reviews. I was immediately smacked in the face by this review:

I have a feeling this might be a trend but I've decided to not read any more reviews today. :wtf:

I mean why not. The wonderful thing about the internet is that you can write anything. Truth is choice, fact is opinion. What's yours is now mine because I cropped out your name in the screenshot. True. I figure the heartwarming nature of the review is to garner points.

/edit
So I was on Steam again just now and I was looking at my game library. I clicked on the store page for Among Us to see if people still liked the game. I scrolled down to the reviews and right near the top was this:

My god! I have to stop. The temptation to look for this review is going to kill me. :kookoo:

Steam will allow nice bot reviews, but they're more likely to censor (remove) negative reviews, even if they're legit.

I like the one about RAFT. Only .6 hours played, but that heart warming review was given is clearly from a person that's put a lot of time, love and devotion into it with his son.

I won't give Valve another dime of my money with all the crap. I'll use Steam's chat and play any games I have through them, but I'll no longer support them for reasons I won't go into.

This is a perfect way to illustrate how full of BS the internet truly is.

Awesome find :D Although, I reckon I might stumble on one too at some point. I wonder if my life will be similarly ruined then :D

That's a spambot.

I don't read reviews myself. I get what I want and formulate my own reviews.

Is there any way to artificially inflate the number of hours spent playing a game? If you have the game loaded at the menu does that count as playing it?

As long as the game has been launched through Steam, it should be logging the time spent in game and will consider it as "time spent playing", even if you're just letting the game sit at the menu screen and you walk away.....at least that's been my experience with in-game time while using Steam.

tl;dr of this is: review bots exist, and leave positive reviews too.
