I don't think they need to. There was the suggestion though that the reason there is not a 2800X Ryzen is for exactly what you suggest.

Some highly binned chips at 200MHz higher would be what you'd expect for a PR boost.

Then again, they can ride on Ryzen+ until Ryzen 2 comes out next year. Likely my next chip.

It's rumoured they're holding onto a 2800X but that's all that is.
They expect to ship 7nm next year so I am thinking they likely do have the above ,or will have when they have binned enough to release the sku.

AMD has clear plans. Ryzen 3000 based on Zen2 will launch next year with marginal improvements and a low price. Some people will find it suiting for them, they will buy it, and everybody will be happy

Well, "responses" are typically planned for years ahead, its likely Intel was working on Skylake during the months building up to Haswell's launch. So, its just gonna be Zen 2, according to their roadmap. Hopefully, it can beat or match Intel in gaming, that would be a nice change.... in the high ofc, AMD is verrrrrrrrryyyyyyyy competitive as a few minutes before writing this

No response necessary for Skylake 4. All AMD can do is release "2800x" which would likely be flooded by comments like "overclocked 2700x for more money, no reason for this to exist".

The stage is set for a grand battle between AMD Zen 2 and Intel 10nm whateverlake, hopefully with full hardware fixes for all these nasty exploits, whose software fixes have wrecked havoc on computers everywhere...

Tier 1 mobo vendors optimizing bioses for Zen+ would be a boost to AMD's rep in the enthusiasts market atm imo.
Speculation about Zen 2 is just that... speculation.

Ryzen gave them a nice bump which made things look promising, but it would appear that the pent up demand for anything red has been satisfied ... global market share has dropped for significantly over last year.

Q3 2016 was at 17.50%
Q3 2017 was at 22.30% ... a nice boost (almost 5%)
Q3 2018 was at 20.70% ... lost 1/3 of the gain

The improvements are quite remarkable but the offerings are still "silver medalists" in most market segments. The drop in market share over the last year indicates perhaps that consumers are recognizing that "more cores" don't necessarily mean more performance. And with MoBo costs figured in, AMD is losing some of the "value" advantage.

The problem is, it was never in Intel's interest to market significant performance increases and since Sandy bridge, if we saw 5%, it was a lot. I think Intel were caught unaware by the media's / consumers fascination with more cores when 'more cores' was not bringing significant application performance increases to the table outside small market segments. Younger consumers graduating from consoles don't know much but when asking mommy and daddy for new PC, all the know is they want "Intel Inside" and nVidia card.

I think for AMD to make a real dent, they need a win ... they need the gold medal cause three months after the Olympics, nobody remembers the name of the silver medal winner... the gold medal winner, they remember, they are on the wheaties box. So when we look at TPUs test results, the fact that AMDs new thing went from 82% to 99% since the lest generation, is less significant than the fact that they finished behind the 1st place finisher.

One of the best lessons the market has given us is the history of IBM laptops. IBM put out the A20p which every year was on the cover of every PC magazine in the country. The $5,000 machine topped the charts in all tests and was always editor's choice. No company exec or person wanted to be considered for a promotion walked into an office and whipped out a lappie w/o an IBM logo on it. Most were not the A20p, that was ridiculously expensive. But everyone wanted that IBM Logo "to be taken seriously". At some point, a bean counter within IBM decided that the A20p line was not profitable ... at that price, they didn't sell a lot and the overhead burden for such small sales didn't make sense in "dollars and cents". But the next year, IBM was no longer on the magazine covers and soon after, IBM was out of the laptop market.

AMDs marketing has been ... "Ooh we have this" ... and "ooh we also have this".... and last round it was "we have more cores". That will win pre-order folks but unless you capture the performance crowns, that excitement can't be sustained. To make significant inroads into the gaming market for example, they need to lose the "When and if this happens, then we will be better".... they need a "look we won this one".

So what will they respond with ? .... my thinking is ... if it's not a win, it doesn't matter.

The i7-9700K is Intel's response to AMD's CPUs.
AMD would be better off holding back until we all know how the i7 performs and then unleashing a lower core count CPU with faster clock speed.

Ryzen 2xxx with faster clock speed is not a thing. Current Ryzens already generally do better at stock settings for gaming and anything not heavily threaded.

AMD has their 5 year design map set, any response at to Intel is only to change announce dates and launches. There will be no design changes unless there is a spike in technological advances.

Amen to this. And for GPU it is no different really. You can't ride on mediocre or 'almost as good as'.

The i7-9700K is Intel's response to AMD's CPUs.

Interesting how no one even realized this is how things are. The matter of the fact is AMD had a octa core with decent IPC a long time ago and Intel just barely showed up with a proper competing product after 1.5 years.

It's also amusing me that my Fx got slated on release for being hot and hungry and needed to be at 5ghz to compete , but it's fine that intel are headed that way now lolz.

There was a small difference though. FX's 5 Ghz was still worse than Sandy Bridge's 4 Ghz in most use cases. And its still not like AMD turned the tables when it comes to IPC. They caught up, that is all.

Maybe, just maybe after all the Spectre/Meltdown/Foreshadow/(insert next leak) stuff has been mitigated, we'll see similar IPC between AMD and Intel across the board. But that still leaves AMD with a Zen architecture that is less capable of clocking high.

So no, not sharing your amusement here.. Its not a real comparison apart from the clocks themselves.

I suppose that's a matter of opinion ,im still 4k gaming on my one , all the latest titles, you probably sold your beloved sandy years ago, so now multi threadings a thing and 4k is my thing top clock matters less anyway , but I at least see that's my opinion , im not expecting it to change yours.
Also lets be clear I still spent less.
Which was my goal.
And on topic the price of intels 9700k, I'd say it's fine for enthusiasts but main stream may bulk at it and go lower teir or alternatively Amd.

Well, performance isn't really a matter of opinion, its just cold hard numbers and facts. That doesn't change your opinion that your FX 'is still sufficient' but that's another matter entirely ;)

But you have a point, FX didn't really age badly and its threads do come in handy now compared to the good old quads. I've had to retire my 3570k and I reckon an FX would have lasted just a bit longer if I wasn't chasing +100 FPS.

Benchmark Scores A LOT
To 9700K - nothing.
To 9900K - probably a 10 core, either now or when next gen Zen is out.

Also lets be clear I still spent less.
Which was my goal.
And on topic the price of intels 9700k, I'd say it's fine for enthusiasts but main stream may bulk at it and go lower teir or alternatively Amd.

Let's be clear, having fast IPC and higher clocks never stopped mattering or matttered less as far as gaming, even now. It's more about processors with weak IPC but many cores finally getting some returns thanks to games being multithreaded.

As for the 9700k, even an enthusiast like me is not willing to pay a 70% premium for 33% more cores.Good there are 8c/8t i7s though, the prices will fall eventually.I mean when there's good competition.
