What graphics cards will be out by PS4 release date on December 31, 2013?

The new PS4, which will ship preorders on December 31, 2013 (for $399), is expected to have graphics equivalent of the HD 7970 7850.

(PS4 preorders are on Amazon, only available direct from Sony: http://t.co/Q1h0uXR0mC)

I am curious as to how the PS4's graphics will compare to desktop graphics.

Granted, it will be only the equivalent of one 7970 7850 - whereas a computer can have 2 or 3 (or even 4 or more, for the truly insane) graphics cards. Of course 1 card can't compare to multiple cards.

However, besides the fact that the PS4 will only have one card, versus PC having multiple cards - I am more interested to know a direct comparison.

Currently, graphics cards don't get much better than 7970. However, in 6 month, especially since we are basically on the brink of a new generation of graphics cards, I am wondering how the PS4 graphics will compare to the best graphics cards around the same time of the PS4 release.

LOL no its not. Try a 7850 with 1024 GCN Stream processors, and shared 8GB GDDR5 memory for the system and video.

Oh so it's supposed to be closer to the 7850?

Yep, and the Xbox One is suppose to have a chip closer to performance between the 7770 and 7790, with 768 Stream processors. Both of which on the PS4 and Xbox 1 are AMD chips. CPUs and GPUs.

Good to know. I updated the initial post to 7850.

However, no one wants the new xbox because it's so terrible.

Amazon held a poll on their Facebook page.
See: Amazon takes down Facebook poll after PS4 destroys Xbox One

PS4 got over 40,000 votes.
Xbox One got ONLY 2,000!!!

And you know, those 2000 that the Xbox One got will buy it, so your statement "no one wants the new xbox because it's so terrible" is moot.

Well I can't speak for others but I DEFINITELY do not want the xbox one!! Not with MANDATORY INTERNET CONNECTION, USED GAMES DRM, ETC ETC THE LIST GOES ON...

If you want one, go ahead, I'm not stopping you.

I don't want one. Im already set on PS4, for Destiny and Tom Clancy: The Division if it doesn't come out on PC.

The Division is almost certainly coming to PC, the petition has met the numbers required to draw the attention of the devs. :)

So many games are going to PC I see no reason for either console, hell, even Hideo Kojima said Metal Gear Solid 5 is coming to PC eventually, :) and Titanfall the Xbox exclusive will be on PC as well, Watch Dogs I thought was going to be a console only title is now going to be on PC.

I am not buying a PS4, I am however spending $400 on the same games they will have :rockout:

That 40,000 to 2,000 shows that the PS4 is going to get a heck of a lot more sales than the XB1, even if only 20% of the people that voted buy the PS4, that's still 8000 to 2000 sales.

There seems to be a lot of hate for the XB1.

Never bought a PS3, only barely felt the urge to buy one. Did buy a original Xbox when they were new, gave it to my brother after having it for 2 months. Did own a Xbox 360, sold it 1 month after buying it because of not using it. Seriously doubt I'll buy either new gen console after looking at my history with them.

LOL no its not. Try a 7850 with 1024 GCN Stream processors, and shared 8GB GDDR5 memory for the system and video.

The PS4 GPU has been confirmed as having 18CU which in GCN language is 1152 Stream processors. The memory bandwidth of 176GB/s also confirms the GDDR5 is clocked at 5.5Ghz.

A direct comparison between console level hardware and PC hardware is not really very useful.

Consoles have the major advantage of allowing developers to code directly to the hardware, or to better optimise the code for a specific hardware setup. In essence this means that more performance can be squeezed out of the console hardware than is ever possible from similar PC hardware.

Based on what we have seen from both the 360 and PS3, it would safe to assume that we can expect some pretty decent PC rivalling graphics* / performance from the next gen consoles at least until we seen a big jump in PC GPU performance - Maxwell / whatever AMD have next after the 89xx series.

*In terms of texture resolution and physics etc - the biggest problem with the PS3/360 on multiplatform games

Most games are coming to PC this time around though, thankfully, and seeing as how I have my 1440p monitor OC'd to 105hz and can run black ops 2 and a few other games at 105 fps I see no reason to go back to any console :) even Metro Last Light ran at 90 fps for me on max, 2x AA, shadows on lowest tho. ./shrug

I wouldnt worry too much about games not coming to PC, particualrily EA games.

Bioware did a shit ton of metrics with ME3, and the PC came in second to Xbawks in sales and active players.

PS3 came in last by a wide margin, but to be fair, the sony's online network stinks, and it took them forever to get the DLC out for them.

So the market is clearly there for PC
