I am looking at newer 4k monitors and curios as to how their refresh rate competes with dedicated 144 hz 2k monitors when running at 2k. You would think the 4k display would have a much higher refresh at 2k resolutions. I cannot find any information on this for the life of me anywhere.

Haha. Are you thinking if you lower the resolution, the panel will run faster at higher refresh rate? It doesn't work that way.
Monitor manufacturers validate the panel they buy from panel manufacturers and sell them accordingly. 4K60Hz and 4K144Hz are different panels fpr example. Not just 4K60Hz being overclocked to 4K144Hz.
And you DON'T want to use non-native resolution on monitors. Will look blurry af.

Yes indeed, I was hoping lowing the res would allow for higher hz... Good to know, thank you.

I believe that used to work with CRT monitors, I certainly recollect having higher refresh rates available the lower the resolution.

Unfortunately it's not a thing with modern panels, the max the panel can do persists no matter the output resolution.

If you're hoping for a higher refresh rate, you can only wait until any brand launches a 4K 144Hz monitor.
It shouldn't take too long considering graphics cards are getting more and more powerful.

Rule of thumb: buy the right monitor for the use case, and if you do processing for it, keep the resolution as low as you can stomach.

So, don't buy a 4K panel if you can't comfortably drive 4K in pixels. And get a diagonal/size for it that gives you a good (not overkill) pixel density at normal viewing distance. This way, you're not wasting performance on pixels/detail you just won't notice anyway, you don't have to crawl into your screen to read small text, you save your neck/back that way, and usually for monitors a higher resolution says nothing about quality.

Its also easier to maintain a higher framerate with lower resolutions, if you want high refresh rate gaming, definitely don't go higher than 1440p, maybe 3440x1440.

Also, 2K doesn't exist.

You can go the other way around. Some 1440p, 144+ Hz displays can also accept 4k 60 signal downscaled via hdmi.

Sorry, what? I had a 2048x1152 screen, that's 2K.
Both Samsung and Acer made several models with that resolution.

As I was researching various 2k/4k monitors, I noted screenshots of the graphic options panel, it listed multiple refresh rate settings and resolution settings... if I come across the screenshot and model again ill share it here.

Some TVs seems to support 120Hz at 1080p and 60Hz at 4K. Not seen any monitors that does that though.

The monitor supports a wide range of refresh rates when running in ‘1080p, 1920 x 1080’ (Full HD), including 24Hz, as shown in the first image below. A ‘4k x 2k, 3840 x 2160’ mode is also included, downsampling the ‘4K’ UHD resolution. 60Hz is the maximum refresh rate supported with this downsampling mode, alongside the lower refresh rates listed for the Full HD resolution. This is useful for devices such as some games consoles that don’t support a 2560 x 1440 signal but would accept a 3840 x 2160 signal.

Even at 1440P &120hz a 4K screen that is limited to 60Hz will show it's weakness vs a native 144 hz screen in FPS shooters and overall performance. If your GPU can keep up a high refresh rate screen will try to maintain it's native settings at all times. The example I use is the Division 2. With a 4k 60hz screen running at 1440P I would get 100+ FPS but could not use the machine gun to get distant kills. I got a 1440P 165Hz monitor and I use the machine gun with a scope to get headshots (of course the damage means that at Level 20 it's just injures). It's not just that though, Racing Games, Fighting Games and some RTS (Titan Fall Ragnarok) also feel much smoother. I am in full agreement that once you go high refresh you can't go back. It's like once you past 1080P it looks blocky. Nothing makes the Desktop look nicer than a high PPI 32" 4K screen though.

with the upcoming rtx 3060 ti coming out, its finally time for myself and the masses to seriously consider upgrading to a 144hz 1440p+ monitor to take full advantage of the cards capabilities. im struggling to determine whether i should pay a premium for an IPS monitor or save cash for a quality va... im not a big gamer, but i dabble in it once and a while, especially with new hardware. most of my time is spent browsing online and watching and editing video footage etc. The top VA's I've come across are all 32 inch.

Ex; a number of sources suggest the gigabyte 32 is superior to the LG 32GK650F
https://www.amazon.ca/GIGABYTE-Monitor-Display-Response-FreeSync/dp/B088P87LHX

I would like to find a competing 27 inch 1440p model.
Aoc offers a decent 27 inch VA for a very attractive price, but I am looking for a more premium VA in the 300-400 usd price range)

Why? 27" is plenty fine for 4K. Been using mine for a good few years now.
its not. larger rez is made to be view on a bigger screen.
its like trying to watch a 4k movie on a cell phone. worthless

Well, that's clearly your opinion and nothing else.
My opinion is that 27" is plenty fine for 4K.
I also suggest you go see an optician, as I think you might be in need of glasses.

LG 27UK650-W 27 4K UHD IPS Monitor with HDR10 and AMD FreeSync Technology (2018), White/silver Response to your question about LG 27UK650-W 27" 4K UHD IPS...
A fellow customer answered your question,
"what is the max refresh rate at 1440P? please post your max custom/oc hz at 1440p."
Matthew B. answered:
"Anything higher than 69Hz and the display would complain "out of range"."
I'm sure higher pixel density at 27 would be nice and noticeable, esp for productivity, but a higher hz would be the most noticeable in terms of overall feel; one must also factor in the hardware requirements for graphics or gaming, which will require a much more powerful gpu. If you can afford a 3080/3090, I imagine this may be a sweetspot.

Anyway, after a few days of intensive research I have narrowed it down to the top 3 price to performance monitors for 1440p.

VA: #1 Viotek GFV27DAB (if you can find it, its out of stock, and no longer available on amazon) Bonus: flat screen. When speaking about screen alone it easily takes the cake and response time outperforms all other VA's, and competes well with mid level IPS response times, but comes with only one cavet, one must switch overdrive tuning at 100hz and 144 hz for optimal GtG/Ghosting performance, and use software to calibrate their monitor color. Not a big deal. However its out of stock and almost impossible to find one anywhere. Alternatives: Gigabyte G27QC (uses the same panel as the AOC CQ27G2, but a bit more expensive)

IPS: #1 LG 27GL83A, 27GL850 take the cake but they are expensive and you are playing panel lottery often have a good amount of backlight bleeding; The $360 two week old GIGABYTE M27Q 27" 0.5 ms 170Hz 1440P 92% DCI P3 with x2 usb3 and 1x usb-c; quality stand + osd may be a run for the money though. Keep an eye on the reviews. [1, 2] Black friday $40 dollar off coupon available starting tomorrow at newegg.com/.ca

Personal fav, little known gem, not available on amazon:
#1 TN: Pixio PX278: compare reviews to LG 27GL850, amazing, wide 95% DCI-P3 color gamut, (only 2-3 percent off from top of the line IPS LG 27GL850) 2-3ms real world response times at 1-144 hz (no overdrive necessary), 400-nit peak brightness; panel lottery seems far less of a problem. If you want an idea of a similar albeit slightly less quality unit, read this here https://www.techspot.com/review/1790-viotek-gft27db/ and video

That is a misconception. Screen size is meant to be viewed from a certain distance. Any size rez can be viewed on any screen size with good clarity as long as the pixel density compensates for it. Mobile phones are no different. They are meant to be viewed at close range & as long as their screen has the proper pixel density & native rez support, even a 4K film would look good on a tiny screen, so that notion is far from "worthless".

I hate that marketing has bought this "2K" term. If 2160p is called 4K*, then how the hell 1440p is called 2K, shouldn't 1080p have that marketing name?

*Yeah I know that the "real" 4K is 4096x2160.

Just my two cents.
