What is a safe temp for gpu with stock cooler?

I just downloaded atitool when running find max clock setting, the gpu temp went form 41c to 71c in a short period of time. Even though i had no errors, the high temp spooked me and i aborted the test. So my question is what is a safe gpu temp range without frying the chip.

Any help would be appreciated!

my specs are as follows

Athlon64 3400+@2.41 ghz
Abit NF8-V mobo
1gb Corsair TWINX Dual Channel XL @2-2-2-5
Viseontek X850XT PE 256 GDDR3 AGP with stock cooler
Maxtor 120gb ata/133 hd
WD 120gb Sata hd
Liteon DVD/RW

71~C for an XT PE is exceptable, under load.

The max safe temp would be the same regardless of which cooler you use...

I would say up to 80 degrees C as a max, I would get an Arctic Cooler for that´sucker if you have space in your case. I had an X800Pro flashed to XT specs...and it reduced the temps from around 85degC to 65degC....
