What is an NMV file and how do you play one?

A friend of mine came to me asking how he can play an NMV file he has, saying he needed a "codec or decoder". I asked him what it was and hes not very computer savy...

its from a security camera...its like nmv or some ****

I did as that post says and nothing worked, it was dated 2003 so maybe the info is out of date. Anyway I got more on what this file is and why its important...my friend's friends set fire to some newspapers being the stupid teenagers they are...and the cops came and arrested them all including my friend. They beat him saying he resisted arrest, and the next day when he was freed he and his dad went around to the local stores there to ask if there were any security cameras aimed at where this happened. One owner gave him a CD with various .NMV files on them, but now we can't get them to play. Any help?
