The question originates form my inquiry about whether or not I'd be able to play Destiny 2 on my slow internet connection

http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/6790702274

That makes me wonder, what speed do you recommend for online mulitplayers ?

Recently I've only played online sessions of Watch Dogs 2 and Andromeda, and it was a very smooth experience but I understand that games like Destiny 2 and Battlefront 2 will require more bandwidth.

Should be ok imo. I played BF1 on an internet connection which had a similar download to yours but a much worse upload (about 0.4mbps) and it was ok. You'll just be waiting a while for the game to download :|

I only buy boxed games. They look nice on the shelf.

Thank you for your input! How little I know about internet and multiplayer is embarassing, hopefully this thread changes it.

I read most ppl say that it's the stablility and ping that matters most, and while my connection is slow, it's very stable and 34 ping seems quite decent as far as I know.

many of the older LAN games i play use around 10-15KB/s per player - the bandwidth usage is absolutely TINY.
I've seen higher usage on some unity engine games like 7 days 2 die, as they load in the map - but those games are the exception, and not normal.

A low speed connection like yours is absolutely fine for playing games, you just need to make sure nothing else eats into your network and uses all that bandwidth, leaving none for the game itself

What about the most recent ones ? Don't you need beter bandwidth for more graphically advanced games ?

If they're gonna run fine then great. I wasn't much into BF/CoD/Ranbow Six type of mulitplayer war games. But Destiny 2 and Battlefront 2 seem very exciting stuff for me.

PS I played literally thousands of hours of QIIIA multiplayer as a kid/teenager.

Nope. The network doesn't need to pass the data for graphics. That's all handled on the PC side.

Check connection with multiple servers on speedtest.net, some servers tend to be slower than our connections at times.

^ that

think of it like "player X is at Y, aiming at Z with weapon 1, at time xx:xx:xx"

the amount of code sent is time sensitive, but its basically just text updates - the actual graphical rendering of that code, is all locally done on each players screen (and this is why sometimes they go out of sync, and players see different things)

.5Mbps isn't going to affect the Gaming Speed, 10 years ago 1.5Mbps was good enough for FPS.

The problem isn't playing, the problem is getting the game.
Destiny 2 doesn't come on the paper disc in the box, for obvious reasons https://www.polygon.com/2017/10/25/16544660/destiny-2-pc-no-disc-bungie-activision

5Mbps connection to download 35GB, I don't think so. Also, most game patches these days are multiple Gigabytes and new games tend to get at least 2-3 patches straight away.

Also, your ping is really high for going to a local-ish server, so that might cause a problem if you start playing games on servers not located in your country. Higher ping might not be a killer, but it'll make you suffer a bit in online games for sure.

until 3 months ago i had 7Mb DSL, and i gamed fine on that. you just download overnight... or more than one night. minimum ping was 90, so his is still perfectly playable.

in online gaming PING is the most important factor as it relates to latency...
the lower the ping the better

The only multiplayer game that I know may have issues, is Quake Champions, but it's in Early Access and probably sends debug info along with game data.
Most other titles stay under 100KB/s upload, and are more affected by your proximity to the server (e.g. number of hops, ping, packet loss etc.), rather than bandwidth.
If that speedtest result shows your ping to the nearest server, then it's not horrible, but still kind of bad.
I'm almost 800 km away from Gorlice, and I'm getting 24ms ping while sitting on WiFi in my house:

It's even lower for central points, like Warsaw, Lublin and Bialystok.

P.S. And it looks my lovely neighbor is using my WiFi hotspot again.

I've played BF3 with the same speeds, and it worked fine. Mind you, I also tried to stream, and even though the quality was god awful, it worked :D

You can look at the Task Manager, Performance tab, and look to see what the average is while playing as well. ;)

But yeah. you should be fine... and no graphics anything are passed through the connection. That is all local. THings like player location and movement, hit boxes, audio by location etc are just some of the simple data which gets passed through. ;)

LOL, the box may look nice, but very few games are actually on disc anymore. Destiny 2 comes with get this, a paper disc, with a battle.net DL code on it.

https://www.polygon.com/2017/10/25/16544660/destiny-2-pc-no-disc-bungie-activision

It's unlikely Battelfront 2 PC will be on retail disc either, especially since Battlefront 1 was marketed only in a few obscure countries on disc, but it only installed origin and a bit of the game, the rest had to be downloaded still.

https://battlefront-forums.ea.com/discussion/71441/any-possibility-of-a-retail-disc-release

The days of getting any game on disc are long gone I'm afraid, so your ISP speed WILL come into play. At your down speed you're probably looking at roughly 1.5GB per hour best case scenario.

Most of them only have a DL code on the actual disc, not the entire game files. You'd have to either be in an obscure country, or buying a very select few current games, or older games, for that not to be the case. It's been that way for some time too.

Just the fact that you're saying DVDs vs BDs, makes me wonder what kind of games you're talking about, because DVDs only hold a max of 8GB each. You DO realize that would mean 8 discs just for a 60GB game, which is a common file size for them anymore?

Just the fact that you're saying DVDs vs BDs, makes me wonder what kind of games you're talking about, because DVDs only hold a max of 8GB each.
lol have you ever actually held a boxed game ?

also, "obscure country" ? wtf americans, are you really as dumb as they say you are ?

I got into gaming buying all my games in box, and saved them all. We're not talking boxes here though, we're talking discs. Enjoy your Destiny 2 paper disc. Hope you're not thinking you can put it in your DVD drive, LOL.

Seriously though, you'd have to either be delusional, or seriously out of the loop to not know most game discs only have DL codes anymore. People in Poland ought to know such things, because there's some pretty good Polish developers in the gaming industry.

lol look at the photo I posted.

I got 19 games since I built myself a gaming PC, 2015-2017 titles, all come on dvds except for witcher 3 expansions that are digital downloads I got boxed with limited edition stuff.

2-3 discs usually, 5-6 max.Usually takes half an hour - up one hour to install, then a few GBs worth of updates.
I can't get the idea of buying a game and not having a box through my head.
I need that box. Only game I got as a digital download was witcher 3 that came with my GTX 980 and I STILL bought the box. Didn't feel right not having a physical copy.

If we're talking cross platform the bulk would have to be BD, because most consoles now have BD drives. Console games can also be sold and traded, so it makes sense to put those on disc. PC however is a confusing choice for publishers. BD drives on PC never caught on mainstream on PC, mainly I think due to requiring expensive BD software that requires buying updated versions of it just to play the latest BD movies.

At that point it's an easy choice for publishers to just offer their PC versions on Steam or their own distribution service, because not many people want to insert 8 or more discs, then have to buy the game again if they lose or damage them. The exception is special editions where they easily clear enough profit to cover the distribution cost.

@cucker,

Yeah and you paid extra for special editions, that's why. Plus a lot of games are 60GB + now, 6 DL DVDs is only about 50GB at most. Anyway, I agree that getting them on disc is nice, but there's no way I'd pay what it costs or wait for special editions to get them that way. Games on discs is more of an anomaly than a common thing anymore.

Yes it feels smart to pay 3-4x as much for the fast internet connection to download games I could've bought on dvds at the same price. Destiny/Battlefront 2 is certainly an exception. Like I said I hardly ever play online shooters.

I've seen many games install +10GB of data from one disc so I gotta say now you're making stuff up.
