Well, right now I'm using a powermac G5, and I can see about six of its siblings from where I'm sitting in the main computer lab (There may be more of the suckers spread around campus but I havn't seen them). They have a gig of memory and dual 2 Ghz processors. I'm not sure what video card they use, it's some type of ATI card. The designation is RV351, I know R350 is the 9800 series but what is RV351? Whatever it is it has 128mb of ram and uses AGP. They have 150 GB hard drives made by, I believe, Western Digital and a DVD burner. The rest of our computers are Dells with 512Mb of ram and some type of P4 with HT.
Very nice, I assume you're talking about a college here since you said campus? As far as that RV351, I did a quick Google search and found this:

"RV351 is meant to replace and update Radeon 9200 cards and will be a direct representative of X300 PCIe cards in AGP market. It's like KY's representative on earth. I expect it to have four pipelines and two vertex Shader units to work with 128 bit DDR 1 memory and to be clocked at close to 300/400 MHz. As always it's possible to expect LE version that will possibly be crippled to use 64 bit memory."

So it looks like it's an AGP x300.

We have a bunch of celeron 700s upgraded with 256 of ram that are just about managing to run windows XP!! It's really dire!!!! We do have some faster ones round. Got a suite of Sempron 2500s that seem to cope ok.

Depends on the type of SCSI used. Ultra320 (320MB/s) might be faster than SATAII (3Gb/s = +-384MB/s) in some situations (I/O's maybe) but would cost a whole lot more and any other SCSI would be slower, but it may (big MAY) be more reliable. And I never knew you could buy a 64MB DDR2 DIMM??

Actually no single disk will fill the whole bus on it's own. No SCSi disk will get you 320Mb/s on it's own. Not will any SATA disk give you 150Mb/s on it's own. SCSI doesn't load your CPU as much as SATA would though.

Also sorry for editing your post, pressed edit instead of quote :p

oh man, our PCs in Austria were so slow, that if you wanted to load windows 3.1 you got a message "This will take several minutes, please take a break" and it booted of floppies. Then In Canada, I worked in the Computer Lab...my job was to gut a whole bunch of 66Mhz machines, and see how many we could get up and running. And we had 4 450 AMD K6-2s running, and 2 "down"...

i kept telling them, to let me build them 10 or so low cost PCs...but noooooo *G*

cheers
Vahid
PS: here you can get brand new PCs for 200€s...perfect for schools if you ask me...

I know, but I'm just saying it's not neccessarily faster or more reliable... ;) And if there were a single SCSI drive capable of 320MB/s then that would've been awesome, but maybe 8 or so drives? And BTW, what's with this SATA2 and 3GB/s crap? We've never measured HDD performance in bits, so why start now with the interface? Just state the MB/s like ATA133 or SATA150.

it's SCSI 320. and they a couple of years old so back then 64MB was mid end or high end RAM i believe

My new computer can use both SATA II and Serial attached SCSI which is faster than SCSI 320. i may go half SATA II and other half SCSI
