I'm getting a new Stacker 830 soon and i want to paint most, if not all of the interior black. So i need to know what kind of paint to use: oil or water based and so on. I think i'll be using brush on, but may use spaypaint for somew components, i guess whatever will be easier. I assume the interior will need 2 coats at least. Its ironic that i have to ask about this, i do construction work and have done many paint jobs but i never worked with aluminum before. I'll be doing other mods as well and will post pics in the case gallery when its all done.

automotive paint is best from my experience.

MKMODS should chime in on this. he's extremely good with this kinda stuff.

well... you should have an air compressor and spray gun. that alone is a few hundred $ for something thats gonna give you quality. there are other ways but someone else would have to chime in on that.

there are different brands of auto paint. some better than others. PPG, House of Kolors, Nason, duplicolor are some of the better ones.

the reason i say to use auto paint is because from my experience spray cans build up really thick and cause things to not fit correctly when you reassemble.

compressor and spray gun for a few hundred $$$ is out of the question, i simply cant see spending so much on a paint job. I agree witn you on spray paint this is why i said in my first post that i prefer brush on, its easy to work with, you can apply whatever you feel is neccesary and its good for detail work in case i want to leave some components stock siver.

i honestly dont know how it will come out, but based on my experience if you use the right kinds of paint, do 2 (or 3 if neccesary) coats it should look good. But i never done aluminum before so you could be right. I'll wait for some folks with experience to chime and we shall see what they recomend.

MKMods had a thread which went into some detail about paints, and from his recommendation I used Duplicolor on my case. You'll want to use automotive paint and you can find it at PepBoys, Advanced Auto Parts, or Auto Zone. If you want faster drying times then you'll want to use lacquer. If you want a more polished look and have time on your hands then enamel would be best. I've just gathered what I know from looking online, I'd send a PM to mkmods if you really want some good advice.

I just got the case back (I had sold it) and its in very good condition, so the paint held up very well.
Its DupliColor HP Wheel Coating and I used DupliColor Self Etching Primer.

YES, i have found that thread, i remembered that we had smth like this on TPU and searched for it. Thanks.

I do have couple of quick questions for you. If i wanna do detail work is brush on paint a no go for aluminum at all? And when the paintjob is done do i have to cover everything with clear coating for protection? I thought that would help preserve it, or no?

the prob with brushing is streaks in the finish.

Clear coating is to add a bit of extra protection, usually shine too. The most important part is a good surface to paint on. Usually the original paint is the best thing to paint over (dont remove it).

Lightly scuff the surface with 320-400 sand paper to give paint some very fine grooves to stick to.

When I paint the inside I dont want shine (flat or satin is easier to paint) so I dont use clear.
