Reaching your left retina.
You can never say, i had quite a lot of high expectations for the GTX 480.

You can't say that nVidia scales better. 3x 5870s scale better than 3x GTX 480s.
The ARES is basically two 5870s pushed into one card. If nVidia did put two stock 480s in one card, its expected to have a 600W+ power consumption.

http://tpucdn.com/reviews/NVIDIA/GeForce_GTX_480_SLI/images/power_maximum.gif

And trust me, I'm no ATi fanboy... I owned a GTX 295 before the 5xxx series and im hoping to switch back to nVidia if they release a powerful card within my expectations.

And 3xGTX470 scales even better than 3x5870 it's all about the limit of current CPUs (just trying to avoid bottleneck, whch is a wrongly understood and used term). The higher you go the less you will scale. Since 480 starts at 15% higher it reaches the limit sooner, but until that limit comes it scales clearly better. In your own link 78% for 2-480 SLI, 70% for 2x5870 Crossfire and counting on the CPU limitation 2xGTX470 would be close to 90% like has been shown in many many 470 SLI reviews around the net.

I don't think you are a fanboy and have not seen any sign of it or anything close to it. But it's common to hear the argument of doubling the power consumption and it's true, weird IMO but true in the case of Ati but it's not in Nvidia's case. You have the facts right there, just look at past cards.

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/geforce-gtx-sli,2298-2.html

As you can see a GTX295 consumes much much less than 2x275 even when at same clocks. Bear in mind that's total power consumption so you actually have to extract something like 100w for the system in each of them, making the difference bigger on the GPU.

We are discussing the posibility of a dual Fermi card. Considering that's one of the options mentioned for the countdown, I think we're absolutely on topic.

I don't think it's going to be a dual card, not yet, but it can be done and within the same power envelope as the HD4870X2, that for sure.

But the "dual Fermi" card isn't going to be the "8800 GT of this generation" now, is it? :)

Think about the things that made 8800 GT an epic SKU of its time (unrealistic performance for its price, power consumption that gives competition a drubbing, etc.)

With good performance scaling comes "good" power scaling. The second card is working harder and consuming more power.

In those cases with 100% scaling 2x480 would consume 2x the power.

I think they're going to reveal that they're going to make a phone that also plays games. I will be called the nGage. :D

Seriously, though, a new chip would be a good thing, not because I'd buy it, but because it would drive down the prices of all the stuff that's out now, maybe making something more attractive than the 5850 I plan to get.

Do you know that I hate you when we are so close to a release? You transform yourself and always write some misterious comments, which make me believe that you know something. And considering that Wizzard is/has been benching the card and that you are probably helping with the article... 2+2?

I HATE YOU
OK?

True, but Bta has also been know to toss out information to mislead us on things.
Anyone recall April 1st's little episode?

And that's why I hate him. His comment can be taken as GTX460 is the next 8800GT because it has good performance, power consumption, etc. Or... he is just being sarcastic...

Just a passing comment on the dual card scenario. Nvidia generally does scale better but we cant compare the Ares to 2 x 5870. It's not. It's 2 x 2GB 5870's. The extra memory always costs more power.

But yeah, given all the hype and tech press buzz, it's the GTX 460 is it not? I dont see what all the fuss is about to be fair. The GTX 480 is a good card - bit hot and so on but definitely a good card. The pricing has just been miserable on both sides of the red green divide.

Lets hope it is the 460, is good and priced aggressively so ATI feel the pressure to lower prices. Just to make your eyes smart, my twin 5850's cost £100 less in November 09 than they do now. I thought tech was meant to go down in price over time....

And in relation to the 460 being the next 8800GT - nah, the ATI 5850 was, in 2009...

2GB 5870 Matrix. 10 watts more than reference and it's OCed which is probabaly what makes most of the difference...

And in relation to the 460 being the next 8800GT - nah, the ATI 5850 was, in 2009...

What did you smoke? When 8800GT came out it surpassed cards that costed twice as much and nothing in its price range or below could really touch it. HD5850 was not faster than previous cards and it was introduced in the normal price point for its performance. With HD5850 you'd pay twice as much for a 25% performance increase over a HD4890/GTX275.

For the same reason I am very skeptic about the GTX460 being the next 8800GT, but it is posible, just as the HD5850 could have been if it had been released for a price close to what the HD4890 costed at the time, that is $160-180... but at $300-350? No man.

You have to realize there is a bridge chip on the X2, GX2, 295, Ares and probably w/e NV releases as of the GTX4 series. Which also requires power, That bridge chip is not configurable like the GPUs themselves, It would be nice if you could overclock the bridge chip itself to enable more possible bandwidth.
