What other makes of PSUs are quality other than Corsair?

ripple can really mess up your system, it screwed my video card fan up (old 8800gt)

the Watts are no problem, but what about the amps? what if your power supply can only supply 62 amps, and 2x260gtx will need 38 each, that comes out to 74, so you are getting 14amps bottleneck?

also TO Power is a good psu manufacturer

When I said good brand, I mean a good brand that puts its continuous ratings on the label versus MAX ratings. How do you get 38A ea. for a GTX260?

Unless your PSU was majorly crippled, Ripple shouldn't be "too" much of a problem. Most reviews/reviewers always have a slight case of ripple but are often let go since "slight" ripple isn't a problem and usually occurs at full load which is hard to achieve with any kind of set up (depending on the psu) And a hard one to point out as well.

Unless your unit was a generic one then yes ripple can be noticeable and a major flaw even when the PSU is at mid to load.

Just out of curiosity what makes you think Ripple was the cause?

A 260GTX does not draw 38 amps. They recommend a psu with 38A amp on the 12V rail for a single 260 because they are taking into account the rest of the components in the system, and taking into account lower quality psus. The 750W Toughpower will handle a 260GTX SLI setup without breaking a sweat.

And while Channelwell used to be a questionable OEM, they no longer are. Some of the best psus currently on the market are OEMed by Channelwell.

All modern PSU does not droop on the rails .

My first PSU for my setup was a HEC , system was ok , OC was medium.
I got the fist HIPER and got better OC , because the HIPER over voltage the 3.3V line.
Does this detail makes HEC a BAD PSU ? Hell no.

By setting the last HIPER4M780 , in comparison with the 580R ,
other that is stronger - cooler , no deference at all.

The technology around PSU's are very matured this days,
its very hard to find a bad apple.

Speaking about cost from my end , HIPER was the lest costly at 130 EUR ,
"Power and Cooling" comes at crazy prices as 200 EUR , not worth to bother.

They just want you to have a psu capable of putting out 38A combined on all 12v rails, so yeah, it can be dispersed across all three rails.

your running a P4 at 100% load your system pulls less than my cpu alone @idle. a 980w PSU better be able to handle it.

I have had 3 Hipers and ALL OF THEM have been a big POS! i used 2 of them till they killed hardware then the 3rd one i gave away when i got a different PSU. And it lasted for about 9months then took out his video card.(atleast it wasn't mine this time) the video card was a 8800GT never overclocked so it can't be blamed on overclocking.

btw i would love to give the new Hiper type-r 2 a try but don't want to risk the hardware... may give it a try in my 2nd rig

Heh yeah I have heard some cases of ripple dealing with past OCZ units, with one having major ripple and that was the GameXdtream which is essentially the same as the StealthXstreme except (quoted from Hardware secretes):
"The only internal difference between OCZ StealthXstream 600 W and those other two high-end models are the rectifiers used on the +12 V output, capable of delivering less current (and thus power)."

Ripple wasn't to much of an issue says the review on hardware secrets, but for the review on the 700W model at Jonnyguru.com it was somewhat of a disappointment.

According to Jonny:
"A representative of OCZ did find my findings concerning and asked that I return the unit for an exchange. I did so, and in the interim I obtained an FSP Epsilon 600W. The 600W version of the power supply the OCZ GameXstream is based on. In testing that unit, I found a good deal of ripple as well. When a brand new GameXstream was finally returned to me, I immediately plugged it in and found the same results as the first sample."

I never did like OCZ, I wouldn't mind them in a rig of mine, but If i had the option of choosing, I'd take the latter.

what PSU was that? Was it the Smart power 1.0 or maybe the true power? those are the only 2 PSUs that i know of that were out at that time and i have owned both of them and both the smart power and true power were great.(both 300w i think) but the Smart power 2 SUCKED i also owned it (500w)
