What sections of the Ryzen CPU get the hottest? Center of the chip?

I noticed my cooler - the freezer 34 DUO, does not cover the entire Ryzen chip, it only cover the center top to bottom, but leaves a small chunk on each side not exposed to the cold plate.

So my question is simple, is it the center of the CPU that gets hottest regardless of how many dies are on said CPU? Like a Ryzen 3900x has 2-3 dies on it right? So technically the EVO cooler would not be directly cold plate contacting one of the dies? But on a Ryzen 3600 it would contact them all since less space?

or should I just try to sell my freezer and buy a better cooler? lol

I think that's normal but you got a Ryzen 4700x?

I plan to buy a ryzen 4700x or 5700x w.e the hell they end up calling it October 8th.

I was under the impression from videos, that most coolers cover the entire Ryzen chip with their coldplates?

Hot side is always towards the bottom-facing side of the chip as it is installed in the board (right side of the chip as you read the text, but because it's rotated 90 degrees clockwise when installed in the PGA1331 socket). Chiplets are always on that side. If you have a single-chiplet CPU, there's only one chiplet towards the bottom right (top right on the chip itself); if you have a dual-chiplet CPU they're both along the bottom side (right side of the chip).

But the chiplets are still towards the centre of the die, not along the very edge, so as long as you don't get all miserly with your paste application you won't be missing anything with it. As with all modern socketed AMD, the AM4 IHS is flat and on the large side, and generally needs a tiny bit more paste than LGA115x where the actual contact surface is smaller than the overall IHS.

This is the chip right out of the box, as you hold it with the text on the IHS right side up. Rotate 90 degrees clockwise when installed in board. Lower right chiplet is missing on everything below 3900X.

As long as io/chiplets have a heatpipe you should be fine.
If you're seeing worrisome temps try reapplying your pase.
Personally Ive experienced the best application /thermal consistency by going the 3 dot route, place one on top of each of the 3 chips and you should be good (as long as a chiplet isnt left on its own without heatpipe contact)

well I figured out a way to get a 360mm radiator to fit in my case, just had to move my HDD cage. so im going to sell this little air cooler after all and grab me a 360mm AIO. i really want the EK 360 RGB one, but it costs $38 for shipping... so eh...

so I won't have to worry about my cold plate not making all contact anymore

This is why I love TPU. I made a HTPC for myself. It started with a B450 and a 3300x. I got a build request for the 3300x so I used that in that. My nephew wanted to build a home server so the B450 board went into that. I then bought the cheapest X570 MSI Pro board. I bought a 3600 when they were $239 (CAD) on Amazon to pair with it. I started with a RX 570 but then that went into a build. I took one of my Vega 64s (Gigabyte) and put it in my HTPC. I moved my TV out of my play room and put my 49" monitor in the spot my TV was. I bought the Gigabyte 32QC ($449) to replace my monitor. I got another build request and bought a 5700 ($449) but it fell through. I put the 5700 in my HTPC. What's the point?

Well my HTPC uses my Nepton 280 cooler that I bought for my FX8320 or 1090T way back when. There is a thread about refilling the Nepton that made that even more viable. What does is have to do with this thread? The Nepton has an excellent cold plate that keeps my 3600 at 30 C on idle so an AIO would be nice. I am not sure if I am getting a 5600X or 5700 but if they are wired like 3300X either will be sweet.

I can't believe the EK AIO's charge so much in shipping, it's crazy. Def not something people in the USA are used to. really a shame, I wanted it so bad.

looks like I will have to settle for the Arctic one now :/

Why is that a bad thing? I thought that Arctic AIO cooling is good.

lot of reports that the little fan on the arctic pump that cools vrm goes dead within 6 months. just not something i want to have to deal with. also arctic AIo is 1 year warranty, and EK one is 5 year... big difference...

Seems like even when you click on the 360 link it pulls this one back up....guess I didn’t realize that at the time. Sorry!

Honestly, till we see the CPU design of the new Zen3 chips there is no point, we can tell you where they are on the Zen2 chips, but they may move them. especially if the number of cores per chip change (which has been rumoured)

You won't even be able to see that on Oct 8th, unless AMD release a view of the chip without the IHS and if they release the models you're thinking of.

Seems a bit pointless to even discuss right now.

as said before it no longer matters, i already decided to upgrade my CPU cooler to one that will cover entire coldplate

Exactly there is a supposedly a totally new SoC the CCX arrangement could be completely different layout. We can just guess like your fantasy rig of how it “will be”

Coldplate....you mean IHS?... the cold plate is on the cooler, you want a CPU cooler than will cover the entire IHS, not the cold plate of the cooler
